Thanks a lot for destroying the Race Design Thread. That was the best thread in the entire forum and now it's ruined. Well done.

Oh, and it was absolutely impossible for me to log on under my old user name. The promised email never came. Excellent work.

What was your old username? I can sort it for you.

fauniera

I've just contacted you via the e-mail address associated with that account.

its a big improvement, but frankly I still don't understand why sizing should be a problem on the web's biggest professional cycling site in 2015. I view bandwidth, computer power and storage as commodities these days.
Because it's mainly about other users, not the site itself. It wouldn't be a problem from a technical standpoint to allow you to upload enormous images and just let the site resize them on the page. But that's going to start slowing down page load times. If we don't try and encourage images to keep within reasonable dimensions, there'll be a performance impact for someone viewing threads with lots of massive, high-res images (especially on mobile).

The other side of the coin is that if the 3000x3000px image you're trying to embed is just going to be resized to 1200x1000px anyway, what is the benefit of being able to include them so large?

Images already in posts are still cut off instead of resized.
Sounds like you might need a browser cache clear - things shouldn't be being cut off anymore. Which thread are you seeing this on?

Yes, that was it. Cleared the cache, now it's fine. Also thanks for the mail.

I like the concept of pristine quality of certain large scale pictures, so I'm against resizing original material. Anyway your answer on user experience is a balancing act and I now understand. Thanks.

I think I can live with 1000x1200 pixels, as the quality from what I see above is pretty good. I would still like to hear from other members, what they think. I notice the Babes on bikes are no longer cropped. Thank you very much for that.

Regarding multi-quoting. While it can be done, the older way was easier, and faster, plus you could multi-quote across threads, which worked really well for mods trying to keep people on topic.

Any way to make pages to where you can double them in post number? I believe they are fixed at 20 posts per page right now. Any way to have the option to make them 40?

With images larger than 1200x1000px, that'd be a convenience for you but an inconvenience for potentially a lot more people, hence the need to draw a line somewhere. Not having to resize an image yourself is a fair point, but only until it starts having an impact on page load speed for everyone.

Well, all the adverts appearing mid page in the threads, on every page, is a bit of a turn off.

The intention is to have those there, but to ditch the full page ads and the ads around the edge of the page which move the forum about. This is a compromise we've reached with the ads team, so we still have adverts (which fund the website!) but do not have a forum which keeps moving around on the screen.

And yet the BikeRadar site does not suffer the same fate.

Just about unusable.

Hope you all enjoy it.

There was an issue with IP addresses being reported incorrectly, resulting in some unexpected behaviour when trying to ban actual spammers. This should no longer be the case.

There are, of course, ways to deal with that.

Ah, ok. That is absolutely fair. Just wanted to test it out.

Okay let's see what happens when I post a big picture (1200x980):

Edit: Very nice result! :) Well done.

This forum feels like an early beta game nowdays.. users are beta testers lol

How could you not test the forum before updating it? Even giving it access to moderators..I can't comprehand

As for multi-quote, it is already possible if you go to the Full Editor, either by clicking the "Full Editor" button below the Quick Reply box or the "Post a reply" button. Underneath the text area for typing your post, there's a "Topic Review" section that shows the more recent replies to that thread. You can quote individual posts here, with the "Quote [username]" link on each post in the Topic Review.

Actually that doesn't really work because the "Topic Review" doesn't go all the way back through the existing posts - it just lists some of them. Even if it did, it's not anywhere near as useful. You want to be able to click a button to "save" that reply to quote and continue what you're reading. This way you'd have to click reply, then, inside the topic review, you'd have to scroll back to where you were (assuming you can go back that far) and continue reading. You may not think of this as a big issue but in the couple of weeks since the forum change it's already affected me 10-12 times.

Also, is there no way to change the amount of posts per page you see? You could change this in settings previously and I had mine set to show many, many more posts/page that I currently see. It made reading the forum and finding posts a lot easier, imo.

So, after multiple attempts to get a new password in order to use my old member account (3 emails to be exact), I have now given up and created a whole new account.

Not only is the forum a mess, but you can't even get a response to emails after two weeks of waiting. Nice service there guys.

where did you send an email? did you use the FEEDBACK button on the bottom left of the site?

Re:

Not sure why people are annoyed that a 3000x3000 image gets resized to something more managable.
Used to hate it when someone put up some monster sized pic that took up the entire screen and then some, that then stretched the entire page and every post on it off the screen.
Resizing makes perfect sense.

that's an easy one - industry standard - far cheaper for the users to be the guinea pigs. Means you don't need to pay for additional staff to sit and do the testing.

as a work-around that may be fine, but if that's to be the main it's a definite step backwards...
Although, this method doesn't even go back to the above quoted post, so fails if you're catching up on several pages of posts and want to quote some from more than just the last page...
