Predictable perhaps, but this is cinematic stuff all the same.

Big loss of face for Phat this preditcs to become.
Imagine the embarrassment having to run election against Lemond.

Yeah, the mere fact that there's a high profile candidate running against Pat is great news. I'm not sure the people that matter will get behind LeMond, but this should still work as a catalyst and a way to mobilize the insurgents.

Talk about a Wake Up Call to Pat :) I don't necessarily think Greg has the skills for the job but this sure does put the cat amongst the pigeons :)

I'm certainly no expert Carol, but everything I've seen about Greg gives the impression of a man of intelligence & insight. And above all integrity (it's without question of course).

I think he'd have all the moral and intellectual authority in the world, and the charisma to bring a great team around him at the UCI.

He would be 1000+ times better than Pat!!! He is very outspoken and not diplomatic....those are strikes against him. Plus I don't know if he has the required organizational skills and experience for a worldwide organization.

But I'm behind him 110%!!! Change Cycling Now! This could do it :)

This is not a good idea in my opinion.

If people thought the anti Lemond rhetoric was bad before ...look out.

Yeah, but I was under the impression the anti-LeMond rhetoric was the province of flakes & weirdo's?

So who's going to give a monkey's about the deluded ramblings of embittered pro-dopers?

Maybe so.

I just happen to think that NO former pro cyclist should be at the head of the UCI. Just an opinion.

In my opinion Greg is not a good fit for a position like the president of the UCI. I would not support him on that. Not that my support means anything.

I think this is a real possibility - and a good one. I'm on record as saying I did not think Greg would be the best person to be UCI prez. BUT, he would be a good choice in these difficult times - and certainly better than McQuaid. I will support him in this.

Chewbacca - you obviously already realize you now have official "i told ya so" rights. Chapeau, dude.

I'll betcha here is what the guys at CCN are thinking:

1. Change is easier from within. Trying to completely replace a working organization will be a harder way to go. Especially if the organization is strong, and has recognition. Changing the course of the UCI will be easier than replacing it. Just take a look at the attitudes of the IOC and ASO in the current brouhaha, and you will, I think, agree that they are a long way away from looking for a replacement organization.
2. It is easier to get people to support something when they aren't being attacked. Telling the UCI commissioners to get rid of McQuaid puts them in a negative position. Giving them a popular alternative puts a positive spin on it. Variant on the old adage "always give your enemy a way to save face".
3. Greg has probably the best name recognition of any person at the CCN meetings.
4. Greg has been an outspoken opponent of the current direction of the UCI's leadership.
5. This gives the UCI commissioners a way to change direction, using their own rules and format. See #2.
6. This doesn't have to be the only outcome of CCN - just the 1st effort. But, it gives IMMEDIATE body and focus to a movement to change direction. More and different efforts can be put into action as needed, and SHOULD need arise.

Imo - good thinking on their part. I didn't see this as a possible outcome from the weekend. Good move, CCN!

+1. Yup, Greg's diplomatic abilities have long been, ahem, known to be less than his greatest strength? But, I think he is intelligent enough, and humble enough, to have continued to learn over the years. Now he has business experience, even if most of the Lemond branding has really been other businesses just giving him branding pay. He has still been exposed to all that - and as we know, it has not been a trouble-free path (spec. Trek).

Given his statement, it appears he is also of the opinion that his term as prez of the UCI would be a transition. Having watched Greg all these years, I tend to think he really believes what he is saying - it isn't just said for convenience. And he will have an organization that already exists under him, with people there who understand organization-type-stuff. And if they are too weak from having to exist under McQuaid, Lemond has access to a lot of big people in cycling and business who can give him good advice on finding organizational replacements. Lots of reason for optimism.

IMO, This thread should be merged with Change Cycling Now....there will be a lot of redundancy and this thread if really an offshoot...or at least rename it to Greg Lemond for President of UCI.
:D Hey! Chewbacca had to get in an "i-told-you-so", didn't he? Probably the only chance he's ever had to be right! :D ;)
But, yeah, they could merge. Pretty much the same topic, or becoming the same topic.

Right now Im not sure skills are that important (we can all train to eat 4 course meals every lunch time). We need someone with legitamacy and an open mind. there are no doubt plenty of minions to do all the grunt work now is a time for a transformational leader who doesnt share the baggage of those in place and where needed can wrip it up and start again.

I like how he doesn't want to be President for long unlike the current and past Presidents-for-life.

this I also find convincing, how he suggests a guy like Dik Pound would be a better candidate for the long term.
