this prologue matters 0 in final gc.

In terms of Rujano's top-5 and maglia azzuro probably this is the case, but it isn't so regarding Basso/Scarponi battle where every second can be vital.

You're being too hasty. He lost 3 seconds to Cunego, who showed good form in Trentino, and beat Rujano by 1 second. It was a pretty bad performance, but it's not the end of the world.

We shall see. It's highly unusual for Scarponi to suck this bad in a short, flat TT. It's not a good sign at all.

It's definitely a bad sign, but just two weeks ago he went from sucking at Trentino to a strong performance in LBL. So we'll see.

Odd to say that, considering the Prologue is more often than not a good indicator of things to come.

no it's not and especially not with gc riders that aren't good timetrialists

at Trentino scarponi was there only to train. Now it is the time and the result was not good.

But I hope you are right!

The fact that Basso has gone so well so early ( 3 seconds behind Kreuziger ) and had a worse leadup to the Giro than Scarponi is cause for concern for Michele ( unless if he is peaking for the 3rd week, which he states he is ).

Well if today is any indication of his form he's going to have difficulty defending his 'awarded' win. Hope he improves and does it quickly!!! Otherwise the only time he'll see pink was today.

It was close to being a pathetic performance by a champ. In any case lets hope he can recover quickly. The race needs him in good form.

I hope it's the curse for wearing the pink jersey that he didn't deserve and never won
until stage 7 we won't see who the real contenders are. That Scarponi rode poorly yesterday is no indication of how he will fare two weeks from now. And if a rider cheats to win, why does that make the second placed rider not the legitimate winner?

Yes, there's a very bizarre casting of Scarponi as villain going on in this place.

no he's not.he was embarassed himself but he didn't have to choose.
we all know who the real winner of giro 2011 was so it's nothing to discuss about.

Ryo said he hopes there is a curse on Scarponi. That is definitely making Scarponi into the villain.

he should not have accepted to ride with number 1 and with pink jersey. he may say whatever he wants in media about contador. his deeds make sure he thinks of himself as the winner of last year. quite sad. although I like scarponi in everything else until this

:confused:Why? It is not up to him to decide whether contador doped or not he just goes along with the decision made by the bosses.

seriously you can't do that.it will cast doubts over the entire peloton which of course wo don't want.same as andy,he supported both rebellin and alberto but there is a point where you have to stop otherwise media will cast doubts over you too.

michele is a nice chap and also alberto's friend for years.of course,he knows it too who won the giro but things are like that, that's how it works in this world...

What. Many people have ridden with number 1 when the previous winner wasn't in the race, surely that can't be an issue.

Evans wore #1 in the 2008 Tour because Contador wasn't there (though conversely, Pereiro wore #11 in 2007), as the highest placed finisher from the previous year. Evans also wore #1 in the 2010 Giro because Menchov wasn't there, and I can't see any viable reason other than the WC jersey either. Garzelli has worn #1 twice at the Giro without being the reigning champion (2009 and 2011), Carlos Sastre wore #1 at the 2008 Vuelta as the highest placed finisher from the previous year. Íñigo Cuesta wore #1 at the 2010 Vuelta as a mark of respect of his experience and record breaking Vuelta appearances.

Scarponi agreeing to wear #1 is no big deal, since he's doing no different to Evans or Sastre when they wore #1 at the Tour and Vuelta respectively.

The reigning champion is entitled to wear the leaders' jersey in the prologue, though that practice seldom takes place these days. However, Scarponi, whether he sees himself as the Giro winner in 2011 or not, never got to wear the maglia rosa in that 'triumph'. I find it hard to begrudge him wanting to at least have the opportunity to wear the maglia rosa.

For your info: he is the winner of lasts year Giro, just like Landis is not the 2006 Tour winner. Grow up. Scarponi was also on the Fuentes list so he knows better than a Contador fanboy, imho.

On topic: Scarponi just has to hide himself for the next 2 weeks, he will show up in the mountains.
