Winter Solstice Ride.... Going to an old winery...tasting a bit, cheese, crackers, and trying to get home before dark. 65 miles total. It's a tradition.

Racing tonight and tomorrow will be a fast ride, it's called Turbo Thursday and we have a couple of groups (always respecting the laws of the road as well), a slower group, and then a B grade being chased by the A grade bunch who take a slightly longer course and their aim is to catch the B grade group and the job of the B's is not to be caught by the A's. I've done it before and I've really enjoyed myself, except when I did it 6 weeks ago and I got a flat (they don't wait), but **** happens.

I like to make the New Year's Day ride special. Down in San Diego for the holidays, I plan to ride from La Jolla up to Mt. Soledad then over to Pt. Loma and back... Some pretty spectacular views.
HAPPY NEW YEAR CNers!

My New Year's ride was a whopping 42km. I have been sick for the last few days, so I was glad to get any ride in. I felt like crap. It did pop above 40 degrees for the last bit.

aargh! sorry to hear...that weather sounds like here. I thought you were in warmer climes.

Even if you felt cruddy it prolly felt good just to get out...you rode more than I today. :p 42k sounds really good right now.

I've been sniffling and such and hope I can ride over to indoor Powermax class on Tues a.m.---supposed to warm up to high 50s F by then. I hope.

Did that ride and in all I did 172km, and yes, my legs are toast. The ride up to O'Rielly's at Laminginton National Park in the Gold Coast was 25km, although there was a 10km lead up and it was hard work, the roads were rough and just sapped your legs and you had a head wind as well. The climb it's self wasn't too bad and for the most part I could get into a rhythm and I was constantly doing 20-22km/h. The last 10km were tough, and the last 4km was really hard with sections up to 20%! Plus combined with rough bumpy pot holed roads so narrow that cars in the opposite direction have to pull over and give way. That 4km on the descent was bad and I hated it, I felt like at times I was going to go over the handlebars, I'm not a bad descender when I feel comfortable with the roads and if I know it was. The whole way down was bumpy and some sections were narrow and you would come around a corner and there would be 5 or 6 cars coming up the opposite direction. Frankly the descent can go to hell as far as I'm concerned.

One guy in our group (who was ahead of me) tried to impersonate Johnny Hoogerland who (I didn't see it) when going over some cattle grids made a mistake and went into some barbed wire, although he had a small cut on his left hand (riding without gloves) and on his ankle and his Colnago frame had some scratches on it, but didn't even rip his kit up and got up and continued riding.

I got back in one piece and I think tomorrow will be a recovery ride.

Just back from a 2-hour ride with some hills, by taking a long lunch break. As i'm sitting in my office now, a storm has just picked up, so it's a good relief. But the most important thing, no boring HT session tonight.

Man am I the only one who remembers the day's when you'd go out for the NYD ride and the streets were empty? Not sure if its because there's more people or no one is really drinking anymore and staying in with a hangover. We'd ride on the whole road and not a car in sight. Now the next best day is Super Bowl Sunday, its so quiet and mellow you have to go out for a ride.

Cool video's none the less good to see the masses still doing the NYD ride.

I remember those days, seems like more traffic now.....the New Years Day ride is HUGE.

Here is a really long video of the ride, taken by Major Motion.

I remember the O'Reilly's climb well :)

It's a great climb but I've stopped doing it - the conditions can just be too much. Mt Tamborine is always a fun climb though and easy to clock up 160km from here if you are creative with the route.

Yeah in future I'll go up to the Alpaca Farm and that's about it and it will be a 15km climb. Another great route I've thought of is to go up Mt Tamborine, down the goat track (which is steep), and up the back of Beechmont and back down which will give you plenty of climbing. Have you heard of Henri Robert Drive? It averages over 24% the whole way which is 3 or 4km up which is another way up to Mt Tamborine. Trucks and buses are banned from driving down that section.

Henri Robert Drive is nuts!!! I've done it once - and once only :p

Going up Tambo, down the goat track and up Beechmont sounds pretty cool though, will have to give that a try sometime this summer.

Glad to see this thread is still going. It is a new year and it looks like both of my kids have goals with my son looking to finish his third century and my daughter wanting to get ride as well. Hopefully tomorrow my daughter's cycling shoes will be in and I can take her out on her first ride in cleats. She is 11 and wanting to get ready for the Blossom Ride in Reedley in a couple of months.

That's great, and also a good way to spend time with your kids as well. Multi-tasking FTW :p :D

Do you ever get a tail wind or is it a head wind? There would be some great racing along the coast if the wind is strong, it reminds me similar to the Giro in 2010 when they started in Holland.

Me? Hopefully it won't rain tomorrow and I'll do a hill ride and see how I go. I did 100km today.

at this time of the year the wind blows mostly north, most likely going to be head wind. anyway, it's always windy around here, sometimes takes me nearly half of the time (or the double) to do the same route.

I have been practising on my trainer in preparation for the TDU where i hope to notch up rides of 70km or so ( the furthest i have done so far is 60km, but on hills ). The heat will be an issue for me and my family friends that i am going down with. Also i am young so i have never done long rides.
