I do not think Basso will be an issue in the tour. Basso has got to be tired after Giro. Kreuziger and Szmyd could be an issue. Besides Gesink and Menchov and Boom who climbs good for Rabo. I do not follow Katusha. Doesn't that mean shoulder fired misle in Russian?
I remembered this question was answered elsewhere recently so I went looking for it. And found it in
an article at Velonews.
I guess the name originally came from a song popular around World War II, about a beautiful young woman who is looking for her lost love. Her name was, you guessed it, "Katusha." Later in the war the Soviets developed a new weapon that apparently struck real terror in the hearts of all who faced it, and which was instrumental in driving back the invaders. It too they called "Katusha," no doubt with much affection. To the rest of the world the weapon was known as the
Stalin Organ.
As far as Basso goes, I agree that he is probably too cooked to win. But he and Lance have a special relationship, so if Basso decides not to really go for the win, look for him to put his team at the Shack's disposal wherever he can.

It's clear that this forum is largely anti-Lance and RS, but they do have some potential in the mountains. Although, if Basso has any chance at all, his team needs to step up in these mountain stages. AC needs less help than any GC hopeful, so I'm looking forward to some talent vs. tactics in the 2nd and 3rd weeks! Evans... he's a dark horse. Menchov... finished. A.Shleck... without Frank, the podium just got a lot more difficult.
Just glad to see some climbing instead of the boring flat stages.
Thor for Green Jersey!
I'm not sure Thor has it sewn up. Watching him try is gonna be fun.
Some of the most interesting things happen on the flat stages - just look carefully.
I agree that Menchov probably won't be a huge factor in this race. Though, as Fats Waller used to say, one never knows, do one?
Evans could be a huge factor if . . . if everything important goes right for him, if he has the right gearing, if he doesn't jump too soon or too late, and if he's recovered enough. Shouldn't be a problem. We'll see.
A. Schleck I think will be less a factor than has been supposed. Especially now that he doesn't have Frank to tuck him in at night. Perhaps Bjarne? . . . aw, never mind.
