Lol you think San Sebastian and vilta Catalunya compares to Giro tour and lombardia

No, of course not. But he said that the only things Nibali hadn't won that Valverde had were LBL and the Worlds which was not true.

Also, lol at you of all people trying to call me out on an unproportionate argument.

Nibali. Valverde has the great her weight of wins but the sheer variety of the big wins for Nibali in winning 2 different monuments and all 3 grand tours tips it for me.

You could argue that Valverde is actually a more gifted rider and that Nibali is someone whose palmares either maxed out or even exceeded their ability level.

Certainly. I don't think he has 80 of those, though, to be fair ;)
He does have far more smaller wins, and among the greater ones it's similar.

Top tier wins: 6 vs. 7
Sub-top tier wins: 13 vs. 3
GT stage wins: 17 vs. 15
Other WT wins: 24 vs. 1
NC wins: 4 vs. 2

Sum: 64 vs. 28

*Official results.

EDIT: I should have included secondary GT jerseys, but I won't bother.

I know but you also have 130 wins against 50. It's nok completely irrelevant.

The sheer amount of Valverde's wins are what keeps them close but Nibali not only has more important wins, the way those were obtained was also more impressive overall

Now we're really back. A re-hash of an emotional argument. Peak forum material.
They're both great but not really comparable as riders.
Valverde has 5 big wins in one day races and one gt.
Nibali has 4 gts and 3 monuments.
Valverde should be compared to Kelly. Kelly wins hands down.
Nibali should be compared to Fignon. Nibali wins that one.
I'm glad we were able to resolve this.

Nibali should be compared to Gimondi.

You can argue about both having better palmares , they are both great, although I lean towards Vincenzo.

The difference between them though, is that Vincenzo generally impacted rraces in a positive way, whereas Bala impacted them in a negative way

Why, he was lucky in three of his four wins in Grand Tours with favourites crashing out, and he won Sanremo because of motos.

Just adding to the legend by saying this for me... he was never "the best" but still managed to win all the GTs and a couple of monuments. You say some were by luck, but I would like to call it perseverance.

Nibali had more impressive wins than Valverde because he did those solo in top tier races instead of relying on his sprint to win countless stages and Ardennes classics and as for luck, avoiding crashing is part of cycling but don't forget Nibali was also affected by crashes in the Rio Olympics and 2018 Tour were he could have won or come close to it.

I could also come up with the argument that Valverde also had his share of luck in the Vuelta he won and with LBL finishing on an uphill back then but I don't like alternative history much

Valverde heard about the discussion, couldn't handle the pressure and pulled out of Catalunya. With Nibali in the Coppi Bartali today, the door is wide open.

Valverde is the tortoise that beats the hare. With his consistency over a very long period he ended up with a bigger palmares than other riders who had higher peaks. What he lacks in major wins he makes up with an abundance of smaller wins and places of honour.

Im trying to figure out if theres other riders for who consistency alone is rated so highly or if its just something that only seems to apply to Valverde
