maybe because they have. LA has historically ground people up and spit them out,without blinking an eye. you have to be pretty hard to get and stay anywhere near the top in this town. that does not mean they are bad people,

Pretty much what I was thinking. In fact, life in the U.S. in general can be pretty trying, in comparison with the rest of the developed world.
