Who is the heaviest (current) pro cyclist ?

I was surprised to read Phinney saying he weighs 85kg on the recent CN article (he must be deceptively very tall). Obviously as a general rule you don't want to weigh too much as a pro cyclist, 80+ seems suitable for cobblestone riders and time trialists but terrible for climbing. Anyways was just curious who the heaviest cyclist was ...

Cancellara and Boonen are both about 82kg which is quite impressive but the best I found was Alex Rasmussen at 88kg. Anyone higher ?

Magnus Bäckstedt is 94kg I think although not sure if he is still riding this year.

Backstedt retired in 2009. He was certainly the heaviest I remember in recnt times.

Out of the current active Pro's might well be Phinney, as Rasmussen is still banned. Even guys like hushovd & Vansummeren are around 80 Kgs.

Riders who combined both track & Road might be in the 80s though.

He had a comeback with Team UK Youth that was a continental team in 2012 and he rode Tour of Britain for example. Not sure if continental teams count for the topic starter though.

Backstedt is still riding, currently for Team Youth UK. So he is still the heaviest.

Ah. ok. Does he count as a pro though. If so it definitely will be him.

According to this forum (http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13494) Pieri could be 93 kg or 108 kg. Not sure how accurate their info is though.

Dario Pieri (Ita) 1.82 m 93 kg
2003 2nd Paris-Roubaix, E3-Harelbeke semi-classic in Belgium in 2002, finished second at the 2000 Ronde Van Vlaanderen and won stages at the Tour of Langkawi and the Three Days of De Panne in 1998.

Saw him racing in Jan 2005 at the Tour Down Under and he looked BIG. Word was that he weighed 108kg at the time, which sounded believable, but I cannot vouch for the source. Forget about Ulrich, this man ate all the pies. Lasted half the first stage. Amazing to consider that this was a ProTour rider at the time.

there was a pic of the bmc team on the podium after winning the TTT at the tour of qatar the other day. it really showed the big diff in stature of riders. phinney and another guy looked enormous compared to the little guys!

That reminds me of this photo of Phinney. Big George Hincapie not looking so big anymore. ;)
