Timing is all that matters regarding this question. And as far as I'm concerned right now Armstrong is undoubtedly the most overrated rider around, right now. To be considered a contender to take the TdF is blindly delusional, considering the kind of year he is having so far, regardless his 1.6 mile prologue result in Luxembourg.(which if you extended that distance out to about 3-4 miles, the gap might have been quite big)
Given his age and his performances this year, if his name wasn't Armstrong, he wouldn't even be on the radar. Sorry, fans.

Most of what you say this year about Armstrong this year was also being said last year as well. He still placed 3rd at the TdF. I think that there are not a lot of people that think he is going to win the TdF this year but they think he will place high.

I'd go with Tommy D because at one point he was the great white hype (I meant hope) of American cycling when LA retired. However since then he hasn't done much of anything except consistently show some promise in a week long stage race or grand tour only to abandon for a variety of reasons.

Although he did set the record for fastest climb up Mt Washington, which is no mean feet.

BIG difference this year is NO TEAM TIME TRIAL. There will be no repeat of last year. This year all restraints are off. This year the stupid rider can be as stupid as he wants. It may not win him the race, but this year, I get the feeling that the race is going to Snap, Crackle and Pop!
BTW, what does "Place High" mean? And in the end, why does a former champion of LA's stature come back anyway? To "Place High"?

Wiggins

I totally agree with those who find it unbelievable that a team like Sky was created around the figure of Wiggins. Even if he was saving himself for the Tour, his performance on the Giro was so poor... Another one: Vandevelde.
What about the under-rated?

Im looking from a non-media side, in terms of media he is by a long, long way. But I mean what cycling fans actually think. So what im trying to say is the people who get constantly tipped to win by actual cycling fans. There is hardly any actual cycling fans that actually think he can win. But there are other individuals who constantly are tipped but never succeed. Thats why i picked Satsre so many people talk up his chances but yet he never seems to come through.
My secong choice would have been Greipel.

Let's see, Sastre has won a Tour de France, 3 times been on the Vuelta podium, and won 2 Giro mountain stages last year. I'm certain I'm forgetting other accomplishments. Sastre is a grand tour gc rider. That is where he excells. He's won on Alpe d'Huez for pete's sake!

LA has been a great cyclist and indeed won the TdF 7 times, he was and is a great cyclist. Right now people tend to think he can do more than he's actually capable of.
And let's not forget about Tom Danielson(must say I'm convinced he rides clean :) )

its probably waiting til the end of wiggins' career before deciding he is overrated but at the moment a career with 3 olympic golds, a few world championships (albeit on the track but still) and a 4th place in the tour on his first attempt at gc, you cant really say that is overrated. none of the above riders are overrated as they have all achieved within their sport.

the definition of overrated = emile heskey

I'd have to say Wiggins and his road racing career. Granted he has a 4th place on the Tour to his credit, but other than a couple of prologue and ITT wins he has done nothing of importance on the road. He's not shown any form in any week long stage races or in any of Ardennes classics. Until he can replicate last year's Tour performance he's at the top of my list.

No TTT this year, but 7 cobbled sections (IIRC) totalling 13K (vs only 4k in 2004), that's just as big a wild card as a TTT. Anybody remember, one Mayo, I. in 2004? I think Menchov also decked in that stage, at any rate he finished with Mayo's group almost 4 minutes down. I went back and reread the CN coverage, it was all out battle. Voigt even switched to a special bike for the pave.

One or more contenders will lose minutes here.

Whoever started this poll is probably consumed by various, similarly burning questions, such as:

-In the french flag, which stripe is the reddest?

you made me really curious. care to elaborate a little bit?

Frodo made his career out of beating up on not very good sprinters. His success came when Boonen was out of shape with coke, Bennati injured, Freire injured, McEwen well past his best, Petacchi (as this Giro has shown) past his best.

Who was he beating last year? Farrar who was pretty much unprotected, Ciolek (ha ha), Bonnet, Duque, Rojas and Hushovd.

A very odd list to choose from for "over rated", most of those names seem to deliver the level of achievement people expect.

To be over rated you first have to establish what a riders rating is, good luck, and then show he doesn't meet it...or won't meet it.

The two leaders, as I post are Armstrong and Wiggins.

Armstrong version 3.x , ie the 2009 and 2010, can't be called over rated because there are so very many people posters here that rate him so lowly. Indeed by finishing 3rd in the TdF last year he exceeded 75% of most peoples opinion while simultaneously falling short, way way way short, of fanboy (for lack of a better word) expectations.

I gave Wiggins my vote because his rating, on these boards, has gone shot up from "strong candidate in short time trials" (a proper rating) to "GC Contenders" which I think is a bit much.

I see Wiggins 2009 TdF success as an abberation, not a revelation. Even if he finishes in the top 10, he'll never threaten to own yellow in Paris.

Leif Hoste, Stijn Devolder (granted, he did just win Ronde van Belgie) and sadly enough Tommy D - I really like him...

And actually I also think Jose Rojas is overrated - he was predicted as the next Valverde (not from a doping stand point), but hasn't delivered other than decent results imo...

Cor what a larfff....

A bloke wins the Tour de France seven times and he's the most overrated cyclist of all time...

I can't remember one poster suggesting that Wiggins would win The Giro or a the Tour de France and yet he's second on the list... I wonder why that is?

Again I must suggest that on here there is a majority of posters that are out of their tiny minds....

As for the guy that suggested Sastre...!
