Hes got a point. Dudes already been 2nd in worlds, 6th MSR, 4th in Olympics and won a giro prologue.

So even assuming he doesnt improve hes gonna get some world titles, stage wins up the ***, and maybe a classic.

Kwiatkowski right now has shown a lot more already than Phinney. And I like both of them.

Sure Phinney is the better time trial specialist, but Kwiatkowski is better in everything else and that includes classics.

He hasn't been in the top-10 in a monument yet. Unlike Phinney.

Milan-San Remo was hardly a Monument this year with its short length. And even then, Phinney just escaped from a peloton that couldn't care less anymore.

Kwiatkowski on the other hand was very strong at the Ronde(much stronger than Farrar's top ten at the Ronde van Vlaanderen), Amstel Gold Race and FW.

The peloton still cared I think. And even though the distance was shortened, the rain and snow and terrible weather are enough to make it just as difficult (or at least close too) as it would have been had it not been shortened. Therefore it was still a monument IMO.

Both Kwiatkowski and Phinney could be included in the poll. This is the first year Kwiatkowski has been up there in the biggest races and showing himself to be a great rider to watch in the future. We'll have to see how he develops further. And Phinney is continuing on improving from last year. Both are gonna be big talents.

They look like they're at the same age as Vino when he joined the pro peloton. Maybe a little older.

the nerdy one for le tour. the gangster for il giro-vuelta double

the father won't accept a schleck like situation because he knows if they will ride in the same race, they will attack each other. there won't be rear mirrors involved in this business

Does that make Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne also a Monument? Some people are good in bad weather, but that doesn't mean they're good in long distance races. Just look at Stannard.

MSR this year was not a normal edition.

Your not there until your there. Just look at gesink.
Flower looks like he's not far off, like just a little more improvement he'll be challenging for monuments. But he's not there yet and that improvement may never come.

phinney is there. In the tts anyways, the worlds time trial showed that. I know you don't rate time trials cos you don't like canc, but you'll get over that when a Belgian gets good at it.

that said, phinney was extremely overrated on here 2 weeks ago with all the fangirl Americans and some haters, honestly believing he was going to challenge Spartacus.

How many time trials has Phinney won? He's not there yet.

Tony Martin has already won 5 races this season because of his time trial skills(ITT, TTT and GC). And it's not like Tony Martin is a big super star, you need more than just time trials for that.

No, harsh conditions don't make races that aren't monuments into monuments. I'm saying the harsh conditions added to the difficulty of this years MSR. The difficulty of if the race had been it's full length (with good weather) to that of a cut version in terrible conditions are comparable.
And yes, some riders are better in bad weather, those riders are the true hardmen. :D

I agree it wasn't a normal edition, but I'm not sure it did a whole lot to effect the final outcome.

It was the only monument where both Stannard(83 kg) and Phinney(85 kg) finished in the top ten. Coincidence? I think not.

In 'normal' Italian primavera weather they'd be blasted away on the Poggio. And the peloton was too cold to care about preparing a sprint.

How many times have Stannard and Phinney had the chance to ride as leader though? Phinney's only in his 3rd year, and didn't even have the chance to compete in the classics in his first year. And Stannard, I'm not going to go back and look at all the past monuments he's competed in, but I think I can safely say he's been a domestique for others in most of them.

The weather most definitely benefited stannard, don't know for sure if he would have been there had it been good weather. He might have been there, might not have, no way to tell really. Phinney I think could have still been up there had it been good weather.
