Favourites who have won more accumulative GT's than Sky ever will with Wiggins? Let alone podium spots! Nice try. As of this date in June 2012, history says differently to what you're suggesting. Actually that description fits Sky like a glove. Whether they change that...keep dreaming.;)

I would say the only ones which have shown, demonstrated and proven they have what it takes to win a GT is Evans and Menchov.

I know Nibali has won one but I do not believe that Vuelta win can tell us about how he will handle the Tour which is such a totally different environment.

And of course Evans I dont believe will bonk, yet Menchov imo seems past it.

The thing it doesnt matter how well he will do in those races because the Tour suits him. ;)

Of course there are stages which are much harder in the Dauphine but these are negated by the extra TT length and they are limited anyway.
But my point is: he hasn't been challenged at all in the mountains. Wiggo won't like the Planche des Belles Filles (too explosive) or the stage with the Tourmalet-Aspin-Peyresourde, which is a bit like the one where he got slaughtered in the Tour 2009. The good thing for Wiggins is that with Contador and Andy out, and Fränk not likely to be at his best, the three climbers who killed him on that particular stage in 2009 are out of the race.

Reluctantly placed my vote on Wiggins. I don't really like the guy and don't want him to win, but his form has been impeccable and he is the biggest favorite by far going into the TdF.

Hoping, against better judgement, that Menchov will be the one to challenge him.

The poll reflects fanboyism more than anything else, right?
I voted for Nibali, but my head says Evans is the best choice, which I don't mind.

I'll be happy if Gesink or Valverde wins too. :)

PS: maybe there should be 2 polls, 'which rider you want to win TdF' and another one 'which ride will win TdF'.
PS2: if Wiggins wins I will quit being a road cycling fan...

Wiggins has done nothing wrong the whole season and indeed since the second he came 2nd to Martin in that Dauphine TT last year he has shown everything to suggest he can win the Tour.

There is one thing he hasnt shown properly though and that is his ability to handle the highest mountains. Yet he has taken on and climbed with ease most of what has been presented to him, asides from the Angliru which did not suit him at all and of course he will be much stronger for the Tour than for the Vuelta.

His team also are strong and ready to be behind him and it seems like his coaching team are incredibly sussed about what is going on and they know how to achieve the highest level of sporting success and they will surely deliver him to the Tour at his optimum level.

Great, now apply that to Wiggins :D

PS: Btw, I know Wiggins placed 3rd in last year's Vuelta.

I never claimed that couldnt happen to Wiggins I merely said that it could happen to Nibali as well.

I reluctantly voted Wiggins. At the Dauphine, especially, you couldn't help but be reminded of how he and his team rode like LA and USPC. Realistically Frank, Gesink and Sanchez are the only ones that have an inclination to attack in the mountains. I don't think that will be enough to implode things. Stranger things have happened. Sastre exploded the Tour in 2006 on LaToussiere.

I voted for wiggins although I hope cadel.
I think to many people believe cadel will gain lots of time on the decents.
I don't subscribe to this view, I believe wiggins was being very cautious at the dauphine and will take more risks at the tour and not loose much time at all. Not to mention that the peloton won't just let cadel go off the front it won't be sky alone wanting to keep him in check many other contenders will as well.

The Tour of California hype has wore off ;)

Californians have just woken up, so brace yourselves! :p
But seriously, even Valverde and vdBroeck have votes, Gesink deserves more.

Ok the fact that Vandenbroeck and even ****ing Valverde got votes is laughable. But why vote Gesink if I really don't believe he can win.

I'm just hoping for a podium place, and that will be hard enough :)

Where is Rui Costa? :p

I think Cadel is the safe bet. He's always really consistent and, if he's good, he'll be able to follow most of the attacks of the 'pure' climbers.

Good to see how hate or love to different riders can change people point of view.
But the best, that hate will not affect Wiggins chances to win his first GT.

The Wiggins hype is based partly on his strong Dauphine TT, where he beat Tony Martin. People expect him to repeat such a performance in the Tour and take such a commanding lead that no one will be able to come by him.

But he didn't beat a Tony Martin at the top of his game. And he beat a 21-year-old neo pro, who had never done a TT longer than 30 k in his life, by little more than a minute. So was it really such a stellar performance?

Wiggo has only done races that suit him, with one semi-selective climb and a TT as decisive moments in the race. How would he have fared in Suisse or Pais Vasco, where there was actual attacking going on in the climbs?

I think Cadel Evans has to be the favourite. He wasn't far off his level last year in the Dauphine, and we all saw how strong he was then in the final week of the Tour. I'm not convinced Wiggins has the recovery to match that.

well said.
People are taking too much from the dauphine which is just a preparation race.
Still I believe wiggins can podium, but I really don't think he is the favourite.
Evans is IMO, I have said it many times but I will say it again. Evans has to be aggressive, and I believe he will be.
