Logically not all of these names can win, so this is just as much a prediction of the top-10.

Level of racing you mean? The level of racing at Amstel is much, much higher than at Lombardia. Purely because of its position on the calendar. Teams are struggling to scrape together a complete team for Lombardia, which is held when the form of most riders is on the way down, or already non-existent. And this comes from someone who thinks Lombardy is the most beautiful race on the calendar, and Amstel is slightly boring.

Which is why someone who still really wants it, like Dan Martin, can get a better result there than at the Amstel.

Well having watched today's race you've done nothing to change my mind. Martin proved he can ride at this level and was aggressive with it too, he didn't just follow wheels and nab 5th at the end, he went off the front of the group and had a go. Good effort. Certainly not a case of "nobody else wanted it, really" and the same with Iglinskiy - great ride. Zaugg was a surprise (though the form book gave him more of a chance than the media coverage did), Iglinskiy was a surprise, Nuyens was a surprise, so was Vansummeren and so was Gerrans. That's the great thing about the monuments. Sometimes the big name takes it, and sometimes someone comes out of the blue. Honestly you could level the same accusations at the big names today of "not being bothered" if you wanted to, but I say they were bothered and just didn't have the legs. Quite a few Lombardia protagonists were at it again today, off the front and battling it out. Lombardia more closely resembles Liege than Amstel does. Liege will find you out. Lombardia will find you out. At Amstel you'll be fine until 750m to go to the line. Not slating Gasparotto's performances at all, he was great last week and he earned himself a podium again today. But Amstel is a race for following wheels and you just need a little bit more than that at the monuments. I still think Amstel would be like that again if it had a non-summit finish - it's got all the cards in its favour that Lombardia doesn't with its spot on the calendar (though as discussed elsewhere on this thread, Lombardia might get a better hand with the September date this year) which is why it's all the more disappointing that it is raced so conservatively. Interesting to hear Sean Kelly express his disappointment with the level of racing in Amstel on Eurosport today, too - there's a man who knows a thing or two about the classics.

No one wins L-B-L by merely "testing his legs", I'm afraid. Moreover, all the teams of the big favorites will have enough World Tour points come the end of the year, the riders don't care about that kind of things at this point of the season.

Nibali's definitely a dangerous outsider, but honestly, I can't see him winning.

Yea, don't give up your day job buddy.

You seem to confuse "level of racing" with "size of the gaps at the finish". That's not what I mean.

Not at all. Kelly said the racing was far too conservative (to paraphrase) and Eurosport commentators also said they'd chatted to a couple of DS at the startline in Liege today about the lack of racing at Amstel and Breukink in particular openly blamed the World Tour points sytem - riders/teams would rather sit back and get points for finishing somewhere in the top 10 than attack from further out for the win at the risk of getting nothing.

The riders know any attacks are pointless, that doesn't mean the peloton is taking it easy, more like the opposite.
