It's an odd year, so an odd winner (Aru, Horner, Cobo...). Granted the list ends there but there is a precedent.
Aru was one of the best GT riders of 2015, and other years he's been close.
But was he really a favourite for the victory beforehand?

I wonder what the history of people being considered favourites before winning one is? Dumoulin 2016 Giro? Froome 2013 Tour, Wiggins 2012 Tour, Evans 2011 Tour?
Dumoulin not really (I'm guessing you mean 2017) the rest yes

Yes, 2017. Because of other commitments I didn't really follow cycling between the cobbles and the Tour - Dumoulin wasn't a favourite?

Not a big favorite, his performance on blockhaus was a pretty big surprise. After all he didn't really do anything remarkable before the giro this year which would have suggested that fantastic shape. I think guys like pinot or even thomas were considered bigger favorites.

Froome has every chance of being stronger at this vuelta than he was the tour
In relative terms, not absolute terms. You'd have to be Pantani to actually improve and put out better watts during a double.
Movistar believes Quintana does

Believed.

I understand why people are picking Froome. He's certainly a contender. But I've seen rider after rider try to do two Grand Tours in a row, and it just seems like too much these days. What Froome did last year was pretty impressive. And he nearly won it then, if only for another great rider (Quintana) beating him. And yeah, Quintana was doing his second tour as well that year, though he clearly seemed at less than 100% in the Tour that year. And Quintana's not here this year. So...maybe Froome wins?

But I'd favor someone fresher, like Nibali or Zakarin

Chaves said he never felt fresher starting a grand tour. If true he's the favorite IMHO.

I'm feeling fresher than any of them, but then again, I haven't done any training.

Fresher =/= Better

WIlco should be fresh enough, not sure about being good enough, but why not, so I go for two GTs in a year for what was once Skill-Shimano

Looking at the parcours it's gonna be very interesting. Contador will have a good chance because no one will not having a at least one bad day, including Nibali.

Heart says Contador.
Head says surprise winner.

I don't believe Sky or Froome is capable of winning any Grand Tour apart from the Tour, especially right after winning the Tour.
I don't believe Nibali can win against such a strong field, even if most of the contenders are here after doing the Tour. It's just... he's never really beaten the big names.
I don't think Aru has that kind of winner instinct to beat these guys, I think he's similar to Nibali, only with less experience.
The rest of these names might be on the podium, but I only see Chaves as a future GT winner, so anyone else would be a surprise for me.

If he doesn't lose minutes in the wind today I think Barguil should give it a go. The parcours makes me think Froome is gonna crack at some point. This should be a wide open race, but I think someone like Barguil, Zakarin or Lopez even will take it. If I had to bet I'd spread some around on the fringe contenders.

I think Froome, Majka and Aru will make up the podium. Not sure in what order, but it's going to be a real race of attrition, and I think they are the three gutsiest riders of the contenders.

Froome has already won !. Just kidding !. Nope, probably already won !.

I predict Froome to dominate every challange.
