If you had to pick right now, in your opinion who will win the Giro? I think it's between Purito and Porte but I think Purito's horrendous time trialling is going to cost him another grand tour, so it's Porte for me.

Porte's a massive shout given his curate's egg performances this year (although worth remembering how hysterical people were about him in March & April).

Presume non of the top riders will bother with the Giro this year, so it will be someone second tier. Purito must surely win a GT finally?

Heart says Purito, head says Porte. Still a long way off however. So hopefully somewhere between now and May 9th the head will start to say Purito. :)

If his TT'ing was better maybe but Porte put two minutes in him in the flat tour TT and that's a lot a time to make up.

I am sure people will come here stating Porte didn't go a good GT since awhile and will fail ( as they did before with Wiggins and Froome actually being unproven in GT's :p )

It's going be the same story all over again I believe.

Porte is yet to win big and this is his big chance hence he should be ultra motivated ala Wiggo 2012 and Froome 2013 training wise at least.

Slight difference is we've seen Porte say he was trying to ride a good GC and then fold like a cheap suit, going in to full on panic mode and cracking badly.

He also did already a good GC in a GT at Saxobank in his debut year though.

.... but wouldnt have made top 15 that year if it wasnt for a 10minutes breakaway and the help of teammates like Gustav Erik Larsson

This crap again.

Remove that stage from the classifications and he's still top 10.

Someone will now come along and say that it has broader effects than just that, without stopping to think through the implications of what they are saying.

What implications?

Its very simple that domestiques overachieve drastically in gts when given

1 a jersey to defend
2 a train of riders superior to them (which is more potent than a train for a gt leader since by definition if a superior rider domestiques for you rather than a weak one he lasts a lot longer)
3 Stops riders who are miles better than them from bothering when they find themselves 20 minutes down on gc.

You have some counter arguments to this, or just the usual whining about how you dislike forum opinion?

If you are too full of bias to approach the Porte argument impartially then take a look at Voeckler. Even without his break in 2011 he would have been 7th in the Tour. Yet other than that hes never been top 15 in a gt.

Must be some massive coincidence that by far his best performance was when given a jersey to defend and a domestique to ride for him

Your first 2 points basically boil down to - he's physically capable of this, but would not normally get the chance or motivation - which is a terrible argument to advance if you want to say why that previous performance is not relevant when judging the rider as a potential leader later on in his career.

The 3rd point is valid but weak - I don't recall a lack of competition trying to get a top 10 place in that race -there were still good riders trying to pass him for his place who did not manage to, such as Sastre.

Fundamentally, it's a very weak argument.
