An early retirement, huh?

Lingering wrist problems from his crash in Pais Vasco last year is the reason given, after the announcement I saw a few people bringing up the Bernard Sainz story from a couple of months ago although I'm not really sure how much there was to that and it's for elsewhere anyway so lets stick with the former!

Actually the main reason he gives is simply lassitude with all the efforts required for relatively limited results now. I really get the feeling that that Bronze medal at the ITT WC was like the best he thinks he could ever get and that now he just can't really see the motivation to continue... 30 years old and 15 years dedicated to high level sport (cross country skiing and then cycling), it looks to me like he has "swimmer's syndrome", where great swimmers retire young because it's just so much work...

OK thanks for the clarification, I remembered reading something about his wrist when it was announced, just had a look and it seems like he's having an operation on his wrist after Tour de l’Ain which will put an end to his season and the information you gave is why he isn't going on next year.

Has Trek confirmed Contador's transfer?
If the contract isn't signed yet, Contador could retire after all.

Hernâni Brôco
Giorgia Bronzini
Emma Johansson

The former is waning and it's clearly the right time to go; the middle has achieved all she probably ever can in the sport so unless she wins a third rainbow jersey in Doha isn't likely to reconsider, the latter I still hope can reconsider as she clearly still has plenty of life in her legs.

Greg Henderson may well end up retiring after the confusion with Lotto Belisol over his renewal.

Not this year, but Boonen will call it quits after Roubaix next year so he wont even ride half the season ... for that reason he could also be mentioned here.

Matt Goss moved quickly from chocolates to boiled lollies - My understanding is he didn't have the dedication to his craft that is required today - I also understand that he was on around a million dollars a year when he rode for OGE.
