Long time pro triathlete Chris Legh gives an opinion.
No doubt like most people you were caught up in the romance of a Lance Armstrong attempt on Kona. Where did you sit on that? Were you wanting him to be there and where do you sit now in terms of the steps that the WTC have taken, and the sanctions that have been imposed?
CL: Initially, before all the bans were sort of put in place, I think the WTC had sort of shot themselves in the foot. And I guess as an athlete and looking at my friends and competitors that had put so much effort in, I hated seeing the exposure and the emphasis that WTC was placing on Lance. I look at the likes of Chrissie, who, whether it’s basketball, baseball, soccer, I’d put her down as probably the best athlete I’ve ever seen in the world, yet there was no emphasis or effort made in building her profile. Yet the WTC straight away wanted to build Lance’s profile. For example, you had the Lance tab on their website. Why didn’t Crowie have on? Why don’t Peter Reid and Tim DeBoom and these guys get invited back and have a role in our sport? Look at the Tour de France. The past champions are always invited back. They’ve got this huge involvement in the sport and for some reason we just skip over that and we jump straight onto the Lance bandwagon. And obviously things have changed since the ban’s in place and I’m pretty content with it.
