well i guess the word "dominating" should be in the quotation mark. Their plan isn't as smooth sailing as they expected this year. With their B team for the Giro, certainly they won't dominating the GT race for this year.

Is it possible they have pushed all their riders too far over the past 2 years? I have been noticing a lot of races lately with late withdrawals and no replacements. All this riding on the front of the peleton until you can't ride anymore has surely got to take its toll on the riders

Peter Kenaugh out of the Giro due to illness.

What? Don't they have a physician in the team? Don't they know about the marginal gains of preventive medicine?

I think this underscores the belief that Sky is putting all of its GT eggs into one basket. They better hope none of the A Team members get sick or injured between now and July.

If that was the plan then why would they initially build Porte's season around the Giro?

They have nobody outside of Froome or (a flying) Porte who could compete for the win at the Giro which is all Sky are interested in. A top 5 or top 10 means nothing to them after getting 2nd last year.

The first bold part- I do believe it was Porte "asking" to be Leader for the Giro, as he felt he deserved it & was time to take the reigns on a GT.
On the 2nd bold part- I don't think SKY is that interested in the Giro after Cavendish not winning the Red jersey, Wiggins massive failure last year, plus bear in mind that Porte could have ridden it this year with a very weak team, which confirms what SKY's priorities are as far as GTs

Nothing I said suggested that wasn't their initial plan.

Pretty much the same strategy US Postal being using for years

That implied to me that you thought they were taking a risk by putting all of their eggs in the Tour basket. My point is that there is no risk because none of those A team members in their present condition were going to do anything at the Giro anyway.

I think the fact that Sky were preparing to use their second strongest rider and Froome's most important helper at the Giro shows they at least had significant interest in doing well at the Giro.

The team certainly wouldn't have been as strong as Movistar, Astana and Katusha but without all the illnesses and other ''issues'' they would have sent a reasonably good team to support him (albeit probably lacking a Super dom in the mountains).

Have to disagree with this. They sent a stronger team to support Wiggins at the Giro last year than they did to support Froome at the Tour and this year they were willing to send their second strongest rider (on paper) to the Giro.

I'm not suggesting the Tour isn't vastly more important for them but then that's the case for virtually every world tour team with the exception of Lampre.

Super Richie is a one man team and certainly all the support Froome needed.
