Calculations have already been done and it's not nearly as impressive.

Besides I wouldn't take his comments as fact. Cyclists have a tendency to talk themselves up.

Some cyclists do, others just let their performance on the road do the talking. He seems to be getting a bit full of himself, comparing himself to one of the sport's greats. I'll attribute it to him being on a high over his and Froome's current success and form. I noticed when he's rolling well, he really gets rather cocky and seems to minimize his opponent's potential to challenge him, with the exception apparently of Contador and Andy Schleck, as if the best they can do is ride his wheel.

Reminds me of Cancellara's lead up to the RVV and Paris-Roubaix, warning his opponents with wording to the effect of he is the airplane and they all better buckle up for the ride. Makes good press but when his opponents actually take him up on his suggestion, his statements to the media of being the lone gladiator against anyone just sounds like whining. Let's hope Wiggins doesn't end up in the same position where he talks himself up to such heights, doesn't deliver and then lines up his long list of excuses to the media. Nevertheless he's been impressive thus far and could potentially deliver the goods if he can maintain this level of form and doesn't blow up in pursuit should Nibali successfully make an escape up the road. No one else is really a threat to his winning the overall.

It'll be interesting to see if Nibali can take any time out of Wiggins on the upcoming mtf's. His attacks haven't gained him any time and he seems to barely to hang on when Wiggins ups the tempo.

I think Purito can at best hope to get another stage win or 2 and move up in the gc in the process.

I guess he's "too excited" to be among with the best, which makes him "lose perspective" of what he's really up against in the upcoming Stages-still he's doing a fantastic job nonetheless

The problem for Wiggins is the difference in steepness & rhythm that the Angliru is going to impose on his riding style-which cannot be suitable at all-not necessarily Nibali's either, but Vincenzo has a good proven record of dealing with insane slopes -like the Zoncolan & La bola del mundo-from last years'

Purito?-entirely agreed with you

i doubt that wiggins is lying.he was riding in an incredible strong headwind like a man on a mission.i think he's very close of his best performance in the mountains,6,6 w/kg verbier.

I don't think he's lying and I doubt he plucked the figure out of thin air. It's just the figure he's come out with is a little far off the mark of the calculated figures even allowing for inaccuracies in the calculations.

I just think the figure of 450w that he came out with was probably closer to his maximum than his average.

He is on the record for 476W at the 10TT nationals earlier in the year.

Which makes ~450 for the last 3km of a climb where he has been protected rider very believable to me

I find it to be a bit sad, pathetic and ridiculous that he compared his performances and ways of riding with indurain

look here. wiggins will never do this. ever in his life.

Calm down dude, he just says that he rode "like" Indurain, not as good as Indurain. Meaning that he hit the front, stayed there in a constant pace for an extended period of time and rode a few people off his wheel. Like when I tell someone "you rode like Txurruka today" I'm not saying they are as good as Txurruka, just that they used his "tactics" :p

Raw power has always been there

Self belief, climbing tactics and leadership are the less measurable qualities that he needed to develop but which it now looks like he has acquired to some repeatable extent

I think 2010 was also the difficult 'second album' year of a big weight loss.

I read an interview with Allen Lim where he said first year of a big weight loss would be stellar (2009 TdF ) then the next year bad ( no doubt about that in 2010 ) then things settle down in the third year - which we are seeing now.

It could all still go wrong though - this woulda be a great performance if he wasn't coming back from injury. Similar respect for VDB2.

Yeah I read that too. It seems to have been true!

I wasn't able to catch the stage highlights until 9pm last night.
Didn't have to avoid the news or media here to avoid getting spoiler-ed, yet the athletics was getting plenty of coverage. *sigh*

Really impressed again, seeing him at the end of the stage made me realise I have no concept of self exhaustion similar to that

I like him, and sure he was knackered and being harassed. But the way he was elbowing and bickering with some of the officials at the end I thought he was going to produce a tiny lap dog and start headbutting TV cameras. Maybe we'll see him climbing Angliru in the leaders jersey with tears running down his cheeks too as his dream vanishes. :D
