Haircut's stock's falling faster than the Dow Jones today.

Seriously, Sky put all their eggs in the basket of a guy who's 31 and has won what, ONE major race?

of course, all the world knew that Froome is much better than Wiggins.
In fact Froome, at 26, has won whatever a rider can dream...

don't be ridiculous...just focus on another team.

I think Lofkvist is penciled in as the Giro leader.

obviously not based on his strong showing here. (I know he has done some sterling work, not cuaght on camera, but today really was the fisrt real showing of his abiliities this race)

*giggles*

Giro - Lofkvist
TDF - Wiggo
LaV - Froome

then you have a slew of domsetiques /2nd GC candidates to divvy up between those teams.

Heck I'd be tempted to enter the tour with BOTH Wiggo and Froome, and maybe set Uran away for LaV as leader.

What about the future GT winner Richie Porte? :p

when he was red jersey they put froome in front before nobody important attacked, it was a good tactic no doubt :D

I think Sky did what they had to do and what was correct with the info they had at the time.

Hindsight is always 20/20 as the saying goes. Sky went into the Vuelta with Wiggins as the leader as they should have. Their/his goals weren't overly optimistic considering he was coming off of his Tour injury. Froome had done nothing to deserve co-leadership. Even after the ITT, his climbing was not a given. Sky played it by ear till Wiggins faltered. That was when they could have made the big mistake of having Froome continue to escort Wiggins but smartly they did not and they saved their Vuelta as a result and unsurfaced a Froome that they could only have dreamed actually existed.

Thing is.. do we have to deappreciate Wiggins or Team Sky as a whole for this? I'm inclined to say Team Sky. Or did Wiggins really push Froome into domestique role?

Here is what Wiggins said after he took red:

“For me to take the jersey after Chris Froome was always going to happen,” he said. “We put the whole team on the front. Had I been fifth or sixth on GC, we would have done it the same way. We stuck to the plan after the time trial. Chris had a brilliant time trial and that put him in the lead and that was his bonus. But we weren't about to change the plan. I came here for GC and Chris was again fantastic for me. That’s what makes this team special.”

Two things that people need to realise:

1. Teams can't see into the future.

2. If a particular stage had panned out differently, it is wrong to expect that all the subsequent stages would have panned out exactly the same.

Uran and Henao are definately not domestiques / 2nd GC candidates compared to Lofkvist

I agree. I can see Sky going with a Uran/Henao pronged assault on the Vuelta next year. The Giro may be a mixture of Kennaugh, Thomas, Lofqvist and Porte and see which one works out.

Of course, any predictions about who leads what team don't make much sense until the routes are announced

You can make as many excuses as you want but you cannot avoid the fact that it has been a monumental **** up by Team (all the little things add up etc etc etc, eh apart from knowing that your 2ic is in fact your top dog) Sky to not win this race. Gotta go and re-check those numbers guys.

Or maybe it was, as Neil Young once sang, 'Red means run son, numbers add up to nothing'. Kinda appropriate don't you think, Team Sky didn't know diddly. Major fail.

Post-hoc rationalizations....

this.

Froome has been an unplayed card in GT GCs. Up until the last ramps on Angliru where Wiggins couldnt turn over his gear, there was no certainty wich option was the right one. Froome could just as easily have cracked too.

The dislike of Wiggins and Sky in this thread says more about the posters than Sky themselves.

At the beginning of the Vuelta if you had offer Sky a third place for Wiggins and two stage wins, they would have taken it immediately. Froome is just gravy.

If I wanted to find teams that have failed in the Vuelta, Sky probably wouldn't be my first stop.

People seem determined to find ways to rat on bRAD and SKY no matter what. I don't fully understand it but it doesn't harm anyone so hay Ho. I actually think SKY have had an excellent 2nd season.

Wiggins came fourth in the Tour so you have to go with him as leader. No-one heard of Froome until now really did they?
