He will if he stops focusing solely on the TDF.
That's more of his team fault than his though.

I don't think he will. But I'm certain he could, but only if he made the Giro his number one goal. He'd need a fair bit of luck as well, though.

that sounds another disaster in the making:(

His case es very particular: He seems to have the skills & performs great "prior to a GC"-but for some strange reason, he "collapses" during in it. as the other folks already mentioned-it could be a mental issue-perhaps internal pressure from the team- extremely high expectations around him & any other you might think of can easily suits what he's going through over the last couple years...

What if he goes to a new team & start from scratch??????

I will say that he can win a GT, i still have faith in him. This Vuelta has climbs that are very steep- which he is not the best on. I think if he can finish this race he can have a good base for next year- the Giro would be a good target, over the TDF.

Gesink is better than hejsdal imo.

But does he have the mentality?

The mentality that is to say - screw the tour, ill peak for a different gt this year.

+1 It's highly unlikely but the only way is if he stopped focusing on the Tour and went after success at the Giro and Vuelta. A broken femur is no joke especially if you're talents are more tuned to excelling in 3 week grand tours compared to one day events. I look a Joseba Beloki and how he was never able to come close to where he was in 2003 before his horrific crash. He was older than Gesink at the time of his injury so I'm hoping Gesink is able to fully recover. We should see him a level above next year than what we're seeing here (hopefully). He deserves some good luck and success.

Never say never. I would not have picked Ryder to win a grand tour or even Rodriguez to finish second in the Giro based on previous racing. I even had doubts until this year that Wiggins could ever win a grand tour. There is no doubt he is an unfulfilled talent like Andy Schleck. If Gesink is doing bad how would you describe the recent performances of Kreuziger and Anton. Two riders I though would have done much better in the past few years.

I agree with what The Hitch said, Gesink is definitely more talented than Hesjedal, and Hesjedal did win a GT, but there appears to be too much pressure on Gesink/Rabobank to make him focus on the (currently impossible to win) Tour. If he were to focus on the Giro/Vuelta completely and he's lucky that none of the other top-grade GT-riders (Contador, A Schleck, Evans) ride it (like Hesjedal 2012) he can definitely win it.

If Hejsedal can... if the right circumstances... everything is possible. Hell even Pereiro won a GT.

But starting a poll like this on a day like this obviously will never result in anyone voting yes.

why would you care about poll results? crybaby. besides only ignorant people would vote based on that day. everyone with eyes and 2 braincels know gesink will never win a gt. hesjedal is far more talented than gesink and had a lot more grow margin left after coming from mtb. hesjedal only did 1 year in rabo u23

Like Cadel Evans...you definitely went missing from here after the Tour considering throughout 2012 you made the same comment about Cadel.

No. Unless he has a good day again today. In which case he'll win the Tour, the Giro, the Worlds, and all Ardennes classics next year.

Or maybe JTL will.

Has Merckx ever labeled a young rider a future Tour winner and been right?
Seems like the kiss of death if Merckx mentions a riders name.

I think this Vuelta has taught us that nobody should ever again try to predict Gesink's results: they simply don't make any sense.

I think he said that after Gesink won the Tour of Oman. Go figure.

He can win the Vuelta and the Giro someday but not the Tour. He only needs the combination of a 'screw the tour attitude' + no crashes + bit of luck with the parcour.
Unfortunately I think he will stay focused on the Tour and therefore he is doomed to keep crashing, which will diminish his chances of ever winning a GT.

Au contraire. It's "people who have common sense" vs "people who don't"

Ok so whoever voted with this chump obviously doesn't because I've never seen a decent post from him.

More likely then not , he probably won't.

I don't think he will ever win a tour. But, he could win a Giro/Vuelta in the right circumstances.
