World Championships 2023: Men's Road Race (August 6)

So you're saying they should stop the motorway, nowhere near a global event and that would be a lot better?
No idea what you’re trying here, all I’m saying is, from a result-driven point of view, this isn’t the best way to make your point. What would be the best way is up to marketeers that know best how to sell the message. Whatever the message here, people will be inclined to oppose the message even more, because of this type of protest.

Maybe, but the optics are what they are. And considering Scottish road traffic is just normally going about its daily business then we're left with oil protestors protesting bikes whilst cars, trucks & whatever trundle around as per usual. It looks comical.

And this is starting to have an actual impact on this WC the longer it goes on. The whole point is it's a 270km endurance slog without a break.

Now that it's unofficially shorter maybe WVA will win. Or even Phillipsen. Certainly hinders Remco's chances.

Interrupting a bike race in the name of protesting oil seems slightly redundant. In terms of optics definitely.

F1 at Silverstone is one thing, but a bike race... is just wtf considering the push towards promoting bicycles as a clean energy alternative method of transportation anyway.
Ya we all know cycling has a terrible carbon footprint but I doubt people reading the headlines later know that.

this will probably be in all the news and some journo will attach the message to the protest (whether actual or made up) so this will probably still get plenty of coverage even without pictures on the actual live broadcast

Ofc they don't do these protests in the US, which is the largest oil producing country in the world and destroying the Earth even more with fracking. The americans bankroll them to disrupt sporting events, cultural events or just people's daily lives only in Europe. This is colonialism.

The easily avoidable part of that carbon footprint is mostly transfers that require airplanes and publicity caravans, though. Neither of those apply to the WC.
Pretty sure all the riders, support staff, UCI delegates, media and fans all had to catch a plane to get to Scotland for the race and will need to do the same when leaving, so yes it does apply to the WC.

Personally speaking I'm saying they should f-off.

It's a pointless protest carried out by self-aggrandising attention seekers role playing at protesting. 'Stop Oil' is just the latest craze to afflict the minds of gullible middle-class university goers with too much spare time on their hands.

This is just my opinion of course.
Middle classes are full of it ... protesting about global warming whilst aspiring to have a massive house, multiple cars, and loads of foreign holidays, yeah really good for the environment. One of these muppets was recently arrested at another protest and when released flew abroad on holiday. You couldn't make it up.

What's 'laughable'. The Just stop oil protesters recently have been assualted in the UK for stopping traffic. With messages of 'what happens if an ambulance wanted to get through' etc coming out. Roll back to 2022 when the fuel prices shot up, drivers were doing 'go slow' protests and they were applauded.

It's hypocritical gash. Car is king and that's the end of it. The motorists don't kick off at road closures that divert ambulances 10+ miles around do they? No, but that's ok as they're repairing roads for 6+ weeks.

Anyway. Race is back on.

I'd like someone to actually explain why protesting not being able to vote at sporting events in 1913 even matters, or makes any difference, or is a "worthy cause".
Pick a protest, any protest, the argument against them is all the same.

Just tuned in and am not sure what's going on, but the reservoir and some kind of lavender foliage the front group is currently riding by look lovely.
