Van Aert said the same. He mentioned he noticed Pedersen was going slower through every corner when it started to rain, so he picked up a bit of speed and got a gap.

Skjelmose was an absolute beast. He was in the trenches from the first lap and in the end still got 11th only 4 minutes down only getting dropped because of a mechanical. That guy should do RvV.

so this is how the UK tabloid Sun have reported MvP winning the world championship, "UCI race leader forced to ‘invade’ Scots home hours before he clinched world title" the story continues telling how MvP had to "invade" someones house during the enforced break in the race to do a number 2...

and thats literally the end of the story as the rest just reports about the protestors

You'd think they had all seen the video of his "surprise" fly-by at the 2019 Amstel Gold finish and never forgotten it. Julien hasn't forgotten and Wout sure knew it was coming eventually.

When Van der Poel fires off it puts everyone in difficulty though, and he really expends very little outside of that. You can see Van Aert having to go all out to just close the wheel.

Those are IMO moments where Van Aert can gain advantage by not responding and letting Van der Poel swim. At that stage there were still a good amount of helpers around.

Love to know what kind of watts and for how long MVP produced with his winning attack? Just read Wout’s comment that he was on MVP’s wheel when he attacked but couldn’t hold him.

Wout is a guy who has won sprint finishes against specialist sprinters. So I am thinking well over 1,000 watts for a minute or so? Then he has to clear lactate to be able solo away to the finish? Quite incredible.

In a deeper analysis, one of the best World Championships races that I have ever watched. The course was really good and the top four riders ended up being the top four in Flanders so these were the riders the race was better suited to.

Van der Poel is an absolute killer in these major one-day races. The way he raced today was close to perfection and he was also the strongest rider in the race. His combination between explosivity, bike handling skills and endurance is unmatched. His crash and the rain only made his win more epic.

Got to feel a little bit bad for Van Aert. He did a very good race but once again we see that he is one step below to Van der Poel in these +250km races. Let's see if he is capable of somewhat saving his season with the TT gold.

Pogačar with another great performance in a course that didn't necessarily suited him thst well but add to dig very deep perhaps too deep to beat Pedersen in that final sprint. I am glad he got that medal though Pedersen also deserved it but ended up doing too much work early on.

The course proved to be too technical by Remco but he will have a chance to redeem himself in the TT, though Küng looked great with his 5th place yesterday. The surprise of the race ended up being Matthew Dinham with an excellent 7th place.

Here in Australia I can’t find any mention of the race today. The media only wake up if an Australian does well. Checked a few rival sites and local news is filled with mention of women’s football World Cup, women’s netball, cricket, AFL and the Rugby codes. Nothing on cycling or MVDPs win ☹️

But also the symbol of a way too aggressive strategy from the Danes. As we can see from the reactions afterwards, you don't get much recognition just by being the most offensive team in the race.

Skjelmose is 10th in the world, and was heading for silver last year if he hadn't let himself get caught in a stupid tactical play close to the finish line. He could have gotten so much more out of these two races if the tactics hadn't been so flawed.

It's the entire thing when climbs are short enough. When they're short, riders can attack multiple times. When it goes over a few minutes, even the best in the world have only one bullet.

Van der Poel has blown himself up plenty of times doing that. He's definitely racing smarter now, he already wasn't the dumbest of riders but now he really saves himself for that one big attack. The first two were just pinpricks, to use a Dutchism

Yeah, it could be. Stirling isn't very far away, so I don't think it's down to travel, and the circuit is slightly modified, but it still doesn't seem like a great choice.

Not sure how big the crowds will be at 1pm on a Tuesday, I'm slightly worried about people crossing the course which was really bad in the junior events and they were at least bunched up. The circuit is slightly changed, no Scott and some extra flat/drag added with a Glasgow Green loop and heading down Great Western to Cleveden. Could be an interesting race.

Absolutely—he shattered was was still a decent sized group with the uphill attack at 90km to go. The group that formed as a result was caught again, but it’s composition showed that it was one of those riders—MVDP, VanAert, Mads, Pogacar, and Bettiol, who would fight for the victory.

I don’t see any coverage in the major U.S. daily news media (although since I cancelled my NY Times subscription perhaps they had something). On ESPN.com, you have to know to look in the drop-down list for Olympic Sports, and then find a subhead link for the article below the lead article about gymnastics.
