I know personally of 2 fantastic writers that work for WSJ and another for NY Times and if they don't have any pull, editors at the papers don't see a golden opportunity.. Then there probably is not any.. When you have passionate cyclists, bleed bike racing and there employers don't want to dedicate a few work days to cover grand tours or World Championship.. Yikes.. Lost hope. In the US we either suddenly follow bike racing because of the back story.. Cancer..gunshot victim.. or sports editors feel what Aaron Rodgers wore before and after practice to be more important.. Cycling no..Tom Brady date night yes..sad

I’m incredibly grateful for it all. Cycling becoming mainstream in the US would be disgusting. It’s better to follow sports that fly under the radar.

Quite a long TT by modern standards. We don't get a TT of this length in any stage race now.

Are there anyone the current crop who you think can cope well with this 48km distance?

Well, Ganna won the 43.3 km ITT two years ago. Is that really such a big difference?
He was also 3rd in the 54 km ITT in 2019.

Evenepoel is the big favorite surely.

Ganna only barely won the IP on track. Van Aerts TTs have been a bit off this year. Kung not winning is law of nature.

Remco is the favorite for me. My two favorites for silver and bronze are Kung and Wout, respectively.

My dark horse for a medal is Tarling. I would've also said Pogacar is a dark horse for a medal but after seeing him after the RR, it seems like he's empty already and needs rest.

So I was busy on Sunday going on a Tom Dumoulin pilgrimage visiting Mount Floyen in Bergen. But after going back and forth about whether I should just look up the results or wait until today, when my holidays were finally over, to watch the race in full, I've finally been able to catch up. Started my watch at 117 km to go, thought about whether I should skip forward to something like 80 km to go, but I wasn't bored for a second. Unbelievable race. Unbelievable winner and what a podium. Easily the best WCRR I have ever watched.

1000W for 1 minute? That's not at all how it's gonna work.

The reason MvdP dropped everyone is not because his pure watts are better when everyone is fresh, he dropped everyone because they were all stone dead. So MvdPs race winning acceleration probably wasn't even his hardest acceleration that race.

Exactly that. At that point in the race none of the riders are at their PB / maximum power curve. What’s relevant is how close to it you can be after several hours of racing and after several near maximum efforts. MVDP and some other punchy riders like Pedersen, Van Aert etc have this ability to have a very solid power curve despite attrition, time and multiple major efforts. In short, a box full of many matches, nearly as bright as the brightest.

So you missed the race getting neutralized because of a protest during which MvdP himself took a Tom Dumoulin pelgrimage to a Scottish toilet?

We so often watch the experts making it look easy: good to be reminded occasionally that it is not.


Far be it from me to tell the UCI how to spend their money, and I am glad that there is a World Cycling Centre for those from countries with no real infrastucture, but what is so wrong with the possibilities of training and racing in Estonia that one of their riders is from there?
