The Austrian selection for Innsbruck:

ITT
Brändle
Preidler

RR
Konrad
Mühlberger
Grossschartner
Pöstlberger
Gogl
Preidler

Which means no Denifl (logic), Zoidl (not so surprising) but more surprisingly no Pernsteiner. He would have deserved to be here :(
I guess such a team means it's all for Konrad. We'll see if such a strategic choice will lead to a nice result from him. I at least expect so!

Really strange selection. All in for Konrad it seems. But Pöstlberger will be dropped as soon as the tempo goes up. Pernsteiner but also Zoidl deserved their place more than Pöstlberger and Gogl. Denifl had bad luck with the injury but how you can't take Pernsteiner with a very good Vuelta till now is beyond me.

Froome and Thomas aren't even riding.

I think it's that classics pedigree barely matters and it almost completely boils down to pure climbing ability at the end of a horrific day.

I think don't agree at all with Kwiatkowski, Alaphilippe being that high, and similarly, I'd put Valverde much lower, cause he hasn't made the difference in a top end race on a hard climb in forever.
I think classics pedigree matters. For example. I would never, ever have believed in Froome even though he would ride in great shape. He just isn't a one day racer. Thats an extreme example since Froome probably is the worst rider in the peloton in one day races relative to stage racing, but you get the point..

It's 258,5km - classics pedigree absolutely matters. The difference between a 200km GT stage and a 250 one day race is significant.

Did not expect Knox to make the team but I guess Froome and Thomas not being there surely helps.

Who is that?

Google tells me it's somebody's face photoshopped on Costa's body
Mate, maybe? I can't quite tell

After I asked, I thought it was maybe Alarcón (because people talked about him and the World when he won in Portugal), but I can't decide whether this is him when I look up other photos of him.

I'm thinking Mas maybe should be a protected rider as well

It's too early for Mas to be protected in such a race. We don't know how he will handle the distance, plus how will he recover after this Vuelta. He's a young rider after all.
But I guess if he's there in the last 20-30 km, Spain could use him as an attacker, to put the pressure off Valverde and enable him easier ride in the wheels of whoever chase.

He was pretty good at LBL if I remember correctly. He pulled the peloton on the majority of La Redoute which I think comes already after 200 kilometers so that's a good sign. However of course this race is a completely different caliber.

In this race going with 1 leader seems like a bad idea, and I'd be going with the best climber in the best form as tactical move while Valverde waits.

True, and from what we have seen so far Mas is superb on super steep gradients which means he has a good shot if he gets to the final climb with a small group of attackers.

Unfortunately, I don't think Woods has a chance (despite his strong LBL and good showing today in the Vuelta) because descending ability will matter too much here.

It's not official yet but apparently the Slovenian team for the RR is going to be:
Primož Roglič
Simon Špilak
Matej Mohorič
Jan Polanc
Jan Tratnik
Grega Bole
Luka Pibernik
Domen Novak

It's not at the level of the top teams but a strong squad nevertheless. It's the strongest Slovenian team ever and for the first time in history they start the WC Road Race with 8 riders thanks to phenomenal seasons from Roglič and Mohorič.

Not the strongest team but solid. A small none traditional cycling nation like Slovenia can be proud of that line up
