I'm not shocked that Palin says such things. I'm shocked that many more reasonable people (like you) aren't outraged. I'm sure you are aware of domestic terrorism in the US which thrives on this kind of rhetoric. Think of Oklahoma city, or the political murder of Dr. Tiller as examples. The extremists on the right have a militant wing. Of course whenever anything happens, they're quick to distance themselves publicly.

In that sense, it's really not different from some of the extremists in the Middle East (or anywhere for that matter). On the one side, you have relatively polished figures which incite the public (examples: Palin, Lieberman etc in the US, mullahs, Hamas and Hisbollah spokesmen in the Middle East). On the other, dark and ugly side, you have some poor, delusional kids who throw away their lives either by blowing themselves up or by facing a death (or lifetime prison) sentence for their acts.

These two sides are linked and this is why this kind of rhetoric does matter. Once you have established a climate where these thoughts are not automatically and universally rejected, you'll often find a few impressionable, poor and angry idiots who feel that a way to give meaning to their wretched lives is to follow up on the propaganda they're fed. Of course, these morons never realize that those to whom they listen would never dream of throwing away their own lives in the same manner, because in truth, they're comfortably profiting from the hate.

Quoting myself here. It is unclear yet what the motivation of today's shooting was. But if it's something along the train of thought which I've laid out in my quote, then a lot of incendiary right wingers have blood on their hands. Mrs. Giffords was quite active in the immigration and stemcell debate.

And when people do that, they've gotta realize there are consequences to that action"

Hippy lettuce prevents all kinds of crime..Maybe the shoplifting of video game controllers goes way up and people use the chili machine at 7-11 without paying but in my experience stoners don't hunt people. The fact that the left don't show up to any and every Rush Limslob event and ask him if he liked being baked on Oxicontin is a shame the guy is a fat discharge of human hypocrisy. The people with websites of doctors and politicians they want dead are also genetic stains. This guy should grow his hair out for the wonderful life that awaits him in prison..they should get a prison group rate for Rush, Beck and this Tucson twit. Some good news today was Palin's TV show got binned

"""""Right wing has enlisted the mentally ill as an enforcement arm.

We all lament that people with mental problems are walking the streets, unless there's a cozy basement. A few years ago, people walking down the street shouting to themselves drew attention. (At least from tourists.) Now they're indistinguishable from many Bluetooth users.

The right wing is a coalition of interests, a sort of "big tent." The plutocrats set the course, but they are few in number. So they are joined by the militarist super-patriots, fundamentalist theists, racists, authoritarians, sexually repressed, and gold standard and other Libertarian types. (There is some overlap.) What they all have is an obsession that can be played to. Promises are made, though rarely kept. The plutocrats always win though.

So far, I am talking about normal behavior. I encounter people who think the earth is 6000 years old, or who ask me why I would choose socialism over liberty. Seriously. Their information is filtered differently. They are out of touch with reality (IMO) in significant ways, but they function. So it works. (Nobody (or at most one person) can claim to be 100% in touch with reality.)

Where they connect with mentally challenged people is the constant appeal to "higher authority" than the democratic process. Where someone is already hearing direct instructions from Jesus or Thomas Jefferson, the play toward violent symbols promises visceral satisfaction. A simple oppressor. It's the government this time. (Jews, Muslims sigh with relief.) With no internal filters, the mentally ill will go hunting. Their prey has been demonized. The authorities are ignorant. Did they arrest Buffy for killing vampires?

When Sarah Palin told people to reload, she clearly said she was not advocating violence. I remember seeing kids throwing rocks at a lamppost. None of them thought they would hit the bulb, much less break it. When it broke, they were genuinely surprised. Then they ran away. I hope they learned from that. Sarah didn't. All the right wingers who appeal to macho instincts they are "just taking it to the edge" or "just joking."

They are always surprised when the deranged and miserable people, those loners, bring their threats to fruition.

We were used to seeing the extream right radicals kill as a show of force against anyone with ideas that went contrary to their limited scope of conscience. Nazi's, fascists, religious maniacs and so forth. This basically meant killing thinking minds per se, because thinking.

When they have targeted someone specifically on ideological grounds, that is when they tried to be "political" as the red terrorists had done, the target demonstrates just how stupid and brainless they really are. No less reprehensible than the latter, just idiotic.

Seriously you should not make this personal.
You have no idea what news I watch. T
hat link that you posted is very rude indeed. I am suprised it is allowed to be posted on a general politics thread. There is some great cursing etc. Nice entertainment.

Just because I have an opinion that this guy probably smoked to much dope and made himself a full blown nut, just my opinion.

I am not too much worried with those guys (rush beck etc.). They all are just a bunch of opinionated fools in my opinion. Why they have such an audience I have no idea. It is the same junk over and over.

The fact that they even started a Palin tv show was an embarrassment to that cable tv network.

I should have been more specific with my hippie lettuce slight. I should have said that dude spent too much time smoking pot than he did trying to get an education and being part of a society. That in my opinion may have contributed to his lack of understanding what was real and not. In any event maybe we will learn in the coming days what his motivations were.

In the Soviet union they reffered to all Western governments as national socialist governments.

In middle ages europe anyone who doubted even a part of the Catholic doctrine was called a heretic and killed.

To many neo nazi groups, any non believer is an "agent of the Jewish press"

No surprise to see redtrevisio join this list.

How could someone possibly have a different opinion from redtrevisio unless they woke up to fox news in the morning, listened to a little rush limbaugh in the afternoon and sang a little "Es zittern die morschen Knochen" before bedtime (that latest one is not in anyway related to the US or the US tea party or the US republican party so its unlikely redtrevisio has ever heard of it)

I have payed little attention to this latest assasination, and have no idea who or what was behind it. Redtrevisio says Rush Limbaugh told him to do it. Glen says the guy was not sent by any political group.

So even if Glen is wrong does redtrevisio try to explain his point of view or argue something.

No

"Heretic!!!!" cries redtrevisio. "He must get all his information from fox news". " I have no proof but lets burn him anyway"

if you pay attention to the mass media here in the US, then you know that this guy was pushed over the edge, by hate mongers at Fox News and others.
Rush Limbaugh is not on Fox. Arizona is an over the top gun toting state.
he could have gone anywhere and shot up the place. he did not. he went
to a Federal Government gathering and did. Gifford was his first target.

Ok.

Whats that got to do with accusing anyone who offers a different opinion of watching fox news?

So the guy who killed the woman probably was influenced by right wingers and it would be nice to discredit them. My post wasnt about that. It was a responce to a certain poster immediately accusing Glen of watching too much fox news, the second a counter opinion is posted.

If you were paying attention....or paying attention to something besides the right wing gas bags you'd know that foxnews and the GOP foghorn are bending over backwards to portray the shooter as anything but a fellow right winger. They show a long haired high school picture of him even though there are recent ones with his Aryan nations dooo going.. Oxy Rush started his program today about the shooter smoking pot.. And then the houston guy on this forum echos him instantly..I didn't read the 7-11 avataring houston guy's other posts to see whether he agrees with me about anything..He like many are just easily told what to think and they do.

"""In October 2008, Tierney was living in Phoenix, and Loughner came to visit. They went to see a Mars Volta concert with friends, and Tierney was surprised when Loughner said he had quit partying "completely." Loughner, according to Tierney, said, "I'm going to lead a more healthy lifestyle, not smoke cigarettes or pot anymore, and I'm going to start working out." Tierney was happy for his friend: "I said, 'Dude, that's awesome.' And the next time I saw him he was 10 pounds lighter." Tierney never saw Loughner smoke marijuana again, and he was surprised at media reports that Loughner had been rejected from the military in 2009 for failing a drug test: "He was clean, clean. I saw him after that continuously. He would not do it."

After Loughner apparently gave up drugs and booze, "his theories got worse," Tierney says. "After he quit, he was just off the wall." And Loughner started to drift away from his group of friends about a year ago. By early 2010, dreaming had become Loughner's "waking life, his reality," Tierney says. "He sort of drifted off, didn't really care about hanging out with friends. He'd be sleeping a lot." Loughner's alternate reality was attractive, Tierney says. "He figured out he could fly." Loughner, according to Tierney, told his friends, "I'm so into it because I can create things and fly. I'm everything I'm not in this world.""""
