My statement stands. Or did the Repubs just vote it down because the Dems wrote it and they never even read it?

Bill Clinton taught us how to parse words.

Democrats tried to pass a bill known as the Disclose Act to require greater reporting of political spending, only to see it blocked by Senate Republicans.

Greater reporting? What does that mean? Greater for all donors, or just donors that give to repubs?

Look at the article Alpe linked to. Does it say all donors, or just would-be federal contractors?

If you think the Dems wrote a disclosure act for all donors then I'd love to see it. My guess (and it's a guess) is that it was written to favor one side over another. When it comes to campaign finance, both sides are not willing to do the right things. That is what is broken.

Simply put, anyone trying to land a contract with the Federal Govt. should be required to disclose who in that government they have helped get elected. That stands on its own irregardless of who else should or shouldn't have to disclose who they donated to.

Scott - I'm still waiting for you to tell me how you would have voted on the US House budget bill that recently passed. Yes or no.

I'm still making my way through the bill. But I would have voted no.

Here's some thoughts;

Obamacare is a total disaster and will create another $1 Trillion entitlement. We can fix our problems with healthcare but it will involve less government, not more. The Ryan bill kills Obamacare and I think that would be a good thing.

The Ryan bill cuts military discretionary spending (probably not enough) by following the Gates recommendations. Probably a good thing.

The future rate of Medicare spending is pretty scary but Ryan's approach probably won't work. It appears as though it will raise costs significantly above what's projected and possible raise insurance costs for everyone by dumping seniors (in large numbers) in the insurance pool.

I don't like the tax idea either. I think the tax code should be scrapped. All deductions should be eliminated and two or three brackets established. Part of the problems business and individuals face is not know what they will have to pay in taxes year over year. For business, it makes it nearly impossible to plan. So in this case, Ryan does not get it right.

Overall, while I appreciate the attempt at actual reductions in spending that will lead to a reductions in debt I don't think his plan will accomplish what he wants it to do and will screw medicare and seniors by 2020 and beyond.

I reserve the right to change my mind as I continue to go through this....

'cept that Kathy Whitmire, a Democrat was Mayor of Houston in 1985; Texas also had Democrat Governor Mark White at the same time. Furthermore, other than four years of Bill Clements just prior to White, the Democratic Party owned the state (1874-1979) and owned Houston (1939-present). As much as the Federal government can screw things up, it usually takes acquiescence on the part of the Governor, state legislature and the rulers of the major metropolitan centers.

Of course, blaming the current problems on tried and true tilting horses solves nothing - but it sure makes folks feel the (idealogical) righteousness!

Private insurers don't currently deal with Medicare A (hospitalization) for most of those 65 or older. So those costs will shift to private insurance pools. Probably raise the cost of insurance for everybody since this is the highest risk.

The sad fact is that they're not even debating the bribery aspect of this, only the disclosure of it. Just shows you how warped our entire political system is.

I read an interesting POV recently regarding this. Have either instantaneous disclosure of all contributions for all (yes including 501c, unions, corporations, individuals, non-profits, lobbying efforts, etc) campaign donations, or have all contributions completely and forever anonymous. I like the idea of the later - it plays on our shared visions of fair play - but that presumes that we all are not corruptible. I am a cynic, and think that politicians and their supporters will behave just like cyclists and their supporters. Namely, if it means a win, then anything is acceptable.

I prefer full disclosure (you know, that "most transparent government" that Obama campaigned on), yet so many politicians seem so afraid of after they are in office (and yes, my criticism applies to all politicians/support staff).

Never mind official seemingly legal contributions.. Cayman Islands Visa records of the children of politcians would be telling.. The things you never hear about.. The 6 and 7 figure salaries for kids with more experience in rehab centers than anything else.

I countered that both Houston and Texas were under the executive control of Democrats not just at that time, but for a long time prior. If you really have an argument for why Houston was in such dismal shape in 1985, due to Reagen - and Reagen alone - make that case. And do so with facts, such as I did in my initial rebuttal. Not stupid insults.

The oil business.. specifically exports of goods and services bypassed houston in favor of newly formed foreign suppliers linked to the bush family. This was the price Houston paid for Bush sr being in bed with the Saudis.

the problem is that there's too much mistrust to allow that to happen. you and i may realize that compromise is required for government to function, but our esteemed legislators, and unfortunately the average ******* in the street don't seem to understand it. all or nothing is the rule of the day, and we all suffer the consequences of that attitude.
