They pulled the points race too? I'm not very knowledgeable about the track but I did go to Worlds when it was in LA in '05 and the points race was my favorite event by far.

and they also pulled scratch?? and kept in madison?? To me points race and scratch are way more fun than things like team pursuit, omnium is great too of course but overall I'd rather have less woman events since that sucks anyway

The madison isn't in the Olympics any more. The scratch, points race, individual pursuit and time trial aren't in as individual events but are in as part of the omnium. Luckily we now get all this for women as well.

I don't understand why people get so worked up about it. These events are missing from one event every four years. Meanwhile you can watch them all every year at the World Championships and most of them at the World Cups as well.

They should get rid of the RR too then.

In fact it would make more sense to get rid of the RR and ITT than the track events.

Archbold is poised to take out the Omnium with 2 events remaining. He is solid at the Kilo and Scratch. Freiburg would need at least 5 places on him in the scratch.
1 Shane Archbold (New Zealand) 26 pts
2 Michael Freiberg (Australia) 27
3 Eloy Teruel Rovira (Spain) 30
4 Elia Viviani (Italy) 32
5 Gijs Van Hoecke (Belgium) 33
6 Juan Esteban Arango Carvajal (Colombia) 34
7 Lasse Norman Hansen (Denmark) 37
8 Zachary Bell (Canada) 37
9 Bryan Coquard (France) 37
10 Luis Mansilla (Chile) 39

Ok, well things changed quickly.

Freiberg won the scratch, Teruel second, Van Hoecke third, Viviani 8th, Archbold 11th.

So I make it out to be

1 Freiberg 28
2 Teruel 32
3 Van Hoecke 36
4 Archbold 37
5 Viviani 40

Ah, I missed the Keirin. Damn. Hoy is normally unbeatable, I was going to say that GB should put Kenny in the sprint in 2012 and save Sir Chris for the keirin but maybe not.

Sir looks a bit off... hope for everyone's sake he is in top form next year. Keirin is his best shot for gold though.

How old is hoy now? He must be getting on a bit...

Also what kind of hairstyle does this archbold fellow have...........................

Freiberg holds on to gold after Archbold set the best time, came down to the last 500m for Freiberg. Van Hoecke bronze.

Makes it interesting for Australia's London selection.

Archbold has a "mullet"

The old guard's powers are clearly on the wane, while the young guns are just that: young.
London comes 2 years too early, or late, depending how you look at things.

Australia back at the top by some margin.

Vos is going like a motorbike. The British Eurosport commentators are going bananas about our girl bridging to the move.

If the road race and time trial were removed, no-one would say the UCI is killing road cycling.

(We all know they do that other ways.)

Anyway, they haven't got rid of the number of track events for London - they've just changed them around.

GB certainly have a lot of kids riding at these championships. Wether or not they will be ready in a year remains to be seen

medal table (OLYMPIC EVENTS ONLY)

Australia 5 GOLD
France 2 GOLD 1 BRONZE
GB 1 GOLD 3 SILVER 4 BRONZE
New Zealand 1 SILVER 1 BRONZE
Germany, Russsia, Lithuania, United States 1 SILVER
Holland, Czech Republic 1 BRONZE

Of the Aussie golds, 3 will be much much closer in london, the mens sprint team is still trying to work out its best four, Pendleton will be much closer to meares by then, and her partnership with Jess Varnish should also have found its feet.

In the Omnium I think its unlikely that young Sam Harrison will be the GB entry. The british team assumedly will also have Thomas, Swift and Wiggins in it.

Brits (and no doubt this will be Brailsfords line) will take comfort from 8 medals in the 8 olympic events that have been contested so far.

The Omnium will be completely different.

UK would be between Clancy, Thomas and Swift?
Australia would be between Freiberg, Howard and Meyer (maybe even Bobridge).
Phinney might show up.

Plus it seems like the omnium result is always a bit "random".

With the giant budget for British track cycling, the medal tally isn't very impressive, I must say.

It's irrelevant, the only thing that counts is the Olympics. And only a few years ago the UK would have got no medals at a Worlds.

Madison

Australia
Czech Republic
Netherlands

Australia had to work hard I think, only saw the second half, but they didn't get their lap until 40 to go (after the Czechs got one earlier). Nice sprint by Bos to secure bronze.
