Russia, really?

Hard to see Australia getting pushed to 3:55/56 now.

Heiko Salzwedal[?] is coaching them now isn't he?

First indications are the track might be a bit slow although the 17.3 first lap suggest otherwise.

The team sprint is easy to call and you would think the IP is easy to call too.

But the TP is a different story. New Zealand with an experienced lineup. England with a young lineup and Australia with Amy Cure...who has proved she is a good junior, but is she up to this standard? I think the TP will be close.

Men's Scratch was a great race, seemed to be going at 100% almost the entire time. Very happy to see Hong Kong take it. Viviani and Meyer were marked heavily.

Yeah, expected to be I guess. The points will be interesting but Meyer should have too much class there anyway.

Wasn't it NZ last year who broke the WR in the race for Bronze?

USA is hard to read - the same team which was well fourth in Copenhagen went on to smash the WR later in the year.

USA: Hammer, Bausch, Reed
NZL: Boyd, Nielsen, Shanks
GBR: Trott, Houvenaghel, King
AUS: Cure, Bates, Tomic

If it wasn't a slow track I would be certain that the WR would fall again. I'm finding it very hard to split these teams.

Reduced interest in non Olympic Events

It looks like the demise of non Olympic events is starting. The women's 500 m field was very small. So much for the "worlds will still have the events" speech from the UCi after altering the Olympic program. Does the IOC actually run the UCI?

IP Qualifying

1 Bobridge 4:17.465
2 Sergent 4:21.481

3 Hepburn 4:22.624
4 Dennis 4:22.667

Bobridge four seconds faster, to be expected I guess with Sergent only having a week or so to prepare. Jesse 5-6 seconds slower than last year.

Dennis had the 2nd best time at the 3000m mark but faded, which is what he did at the nationals I think.

GB v US for gold. The very young GB pair help post the fastest QT.
Virtually the same mark as they hit in the Manchester WC.

France and GB dominate the sprint qualifying.

Times are definitely slow at the Apledoorn bowl though.

Great match-up between Kenny & Perkins. Shane Perkins would have to be disappointed-he just got bettered by tactics.

Seems for the sprint, this track is all about tactics. Very unforgiving and next to no wind up off the final bend.

So pleased for the GB girls. Dani was only drafted in last November.
Watched her dad and my bro-in-law going mad, celebrating on Eurosport.................quite embarrassing!:D

Men's sprint qualifying:

1 153 BOURGAIN Mickaël FRA
2 171 HOY Chris GBR
3 173 KENNY Jason GBR
4 152 BAUGE Gregory FRA
5 156 D'ALMEIDA Michaël FRA
6 71 PERKINS Shane AUS
7 163 SIREAU Kévin FRA
8 72 SUNDERLAND Scott AUS

Notice anything?

Only 3 of these can ride in the Olympics.

Nice work, UCI.

Congratulations to Hong Kong for the gold medal ! And to Australia for the three gold medals they have won in first two days.

Almost. Sunderland got the better of Bauge on both occasions but still didn't have the speed. But I guess the top4 are all close enough in speed that it will be the tactics which matter.

I enjoyed the sprints a lot, which I don't usually do.

In the Women's Team Sprint, Pendleton took a lot of time out of McCulloch... this will be very close in London I think.

Certainly, Pendleton had the fastest second lap split out of everybody.
She had a lovely draft from Jess V; the advantage of being slight.
It's a question of how much further young Jess can dip under 19 seconds, by next year.
Of course, it Vicky P's powers were to dip, there is someone else on the up and waiting in the wings to take over.;)

GB may well become the dominant force in the event, but 2012 is fast approaching.

Kenny beats Hoy.

If kenny wins the final GB cycling have the unenviable task of working out which one doesnt race the sprint in the olympics.

Shouldnt have to make that decision. complete farce.

Points race was absolutely superb, another big F U to the UCI/Olympic commitee for pulling it. Great win by the columbian and Meyer was totally owned, didnt look the same without the favourable atmospheric conditions.

Which of course he doesn't because of lovely Gregory. First man since Rousseau to get three in a row.

This has been the most entertaining Worlds for a while so far, hope it continues over the weekend.

From what it it looked like (and I don't know much about track cycling) Meyer was the strongest in the race, it was pretty impressive. The Colombian took a lap in an amazing way and totally deserves the win, but after that lap Meyer seemed to be in most of the moves and covered the ones he wasn't in. I was kinda rooting for the guy in the end. He blew himself up trying to get the 20 points back though.

Schep also did a lot of the work, but he seemed to try a little too hard for the homecrowd.

but the columbian also did an amazing job of chasing down meyer several times, and then when it looked like meyer was poised with 2 sprints left and just 5 pts behind, the columbian went and won the penultimate sprint.

Where is Ryo? Surely he's a track fan now!

I thought Edwin was going to blow, not many can take a lap the way he did and survive the race. He looked gassed too, as he did after each of his big sprints (not bad speed) but then managed to recover and defend. I wonder if they underestimated him or just couldn't be bothered pulling him back - because the way he accelerated he would have had a 100m before anyone could do anything about it. Overall he was more or less as strong as Meyer and completely deserved the win, might be tougher next year though.

True, he really pulled through in the end. After he lapped the bunch he only struggled for a few laps and was involved again pretty soon after that.

Meyer blew up in the end, but again in my POV he did an amazing amount of work trying to get back the 20 points. He was heavily marked and didn't seem to get any help when others went. Apart form Schep of course :D

Winner isn't up for discussion though, that's not what I meant. You just seemed to slam Meyer while I thought he was fantastic.

They pulled the points race too? I'm not very knowledgeable about the track but I did go to Worlds when it was in LA in '05 and the points race was my favorite event by far.
