Let's see the top 5 of each WT team on the UCI World Ranking.

WT rankings are a pretty bad indicator though. Unless, of course, winning the Tour Down Under and a top 5 finish on a stage is indeed more prestigious than winning Paris-Roubaix

UCI ranking is different compared to WT ranking.

Cannondale has only 5 wins and their biggest win is a stage on California which has a complete trash lineup. Their best result in this season is a 2nd placement on a stage in Giro.

Giant got decimated by the accident but they still managed to get 2 Giro victories, so they are better than Cannondale even without Degenkolb.

Lampre: 2 Giro stage + a Catalunya stage as WT victories.

IAM: Giro + Tour de Suisse stage victories

DDD: 4 WT victories

Cannondale is easily the worst team by a mile, its not even close
They do not win a lot of races, but I think in terms of team depth Cannondale is atleast on par with IAM and Lampre too. One could argue that Cannondale is heavily underperforming, while IAM is simply performing to the level of their riders.

To be honest, I don't care about team depth. Your goal is to win races and podium other races like momument and GT's, everything else is irrelevant to a team's success.

Putting aside Contador and Sagan, Tinkoff suck ***, otherwise Cannondale is pretty lame
You could use that logic on pretty much any team. If you take them away, you have to take away the two best riders on the other teams. Looking at the list of the World ranking posted above their 3rd, 4th and 5th best riders aren't necessarily worse than other teams' 3rd, 4th, 5th.

expectations vs delivery on those expectations is what a sponsor looks for. Uran was expected to win the Giro. He was nowhere close. Cannondale have got a great team yet no results so far which means they are probably the worst team. IAM donot have any stars and they still manage to win a number of stages. So they are pretty much ok in my opinion. Only stage wins, jerseys and race podiums count for sponsors.

Yeah. I might be a bit harsh with Uran, but in 2013 and 2014 he never seem capable of beating Nibali and Nairo. Was the best of the rest, a field of 2nd tier GC riders. 2014, if I recall correctly, wasn't a Giro that saw a lot of attacks.

This year the number of top tier GC riders, pre-race, was superior, imo.

At the beginning of the Giro, a top-5 for Uran was a good result for me. The same for Chaves, btw.

Same could be said for so many other teams.
When Contador quit TdF 2014 because of injury, guess who got the next mountain stage? Rafal Majka... and he got other one before Tour ended. Plus he could bring a mountain jersey to Paris and he got other victory in 2015 saving at least (the only) one stage win for Tinkoff-Saxo that year.

The "take away the top 2 riders" scheme would be great for Cannondale. They have no big stars, but they have lots of squad depth which, for some reason, is failing to deliver this year.

If we do an average of the current CQRanking score for the 9 best riders of each team we have (from best to worst):

Movistar Team (Castroviejo, Herrada, Izagirre, Lobato, Malori, Moreno, Quintana, Valverde, Visconti): 1070.111

Trek - Segafredo (Bobridge, Bonifazio, Cancellara, Felline, Mollema, Nizzolo, Schleck, Stuyven, Theuns): 620.333

Team LottoNL - Jumbo (Gesink, Groenewegen, Kelderman, Kruijswijk, Roglic, Teunissen, Van Asbroeck, Van Emden, Vanmarcke): 586.667

Lampre - Merida (Conti, Costa, Ferrari, Koshevoy, Kump, Meintjes, Modolo, Polanc, Ulissi): 527.333

Dimension Data (Berhane, Boasson Hagen, Cavendish, Cummings, Janse Van Rensburg, Kudus, Pauwels, Sbaragli, Siutsou): 513.444

Team Giant - Alpecin (Andersen, Arndt, Barguil, Degenkolb, Dumoulin, Geschke, Oomen, Preidler, Sinkeldam): 509.222

IAM Cycling (Coppel, Devenyns, Enger, Frank, Haussler, Hollenstein, Naesen, Pantano, Van Genechten): 405.778

Picking up on the last post, had a little bit of time available and calculated the improvement in CQ points for the WT teams from current roster last year's score until present date.

IAM Cycling -> +21.615%
FDJ -> +16.096%
Etixx -> +15.434%
LottoNL -> +14.036%
Astana -> +8.243%
Movistar -> +2.483%

Ag2r -> -1.645%
Orica -> -3.316%
Tinkoff -> -3.405%
Lampre -> -5.518%
BMC -> -6.117%
Giant -> -6.730%
Dimension Data -> -7.135%
Trek -> -10.693%
Cannondale -> -11.078%
Lotto Soudal -> -11.808%
Sky -> -12.201%
Katusha -> -16.110%

Those last two points are very interesting, Ricco. Thanks very much for posting.

Most of it is as expected (ish), but I would have expected FDJ to be higher, and Lotto Soudal to be a fair bit lower.

I would have also expected Etixx and Sky to be closer to Movistar. They really are ahead by quite a bit.
