And these are the moments - where TV pictures makes it feasable for the viewer to observe the nuances between the 4 riders - and especially the last 30k where the discipline really is turning to take its toll, where retaining the images delivers an absolutely unique and essential nuance for this very special type challenge.

With split-screens you can get that with multiple (my suggestion being four) different team! :D And also the differences in tiredness depending on how far each team is.

For sure :)
However, my essential point was the meshmerizing feeling of studying in-depth details of four riders in struggle.
The collaboration displaying just small cracks in the surface, the collaboration starting to fall just a tad apart, the TV cam following the squad for entire two minutes without interruption.

I could use a 100" monitor for this alone.
When you have experienced it before, this kind of slow-TV can IMO do something very special.
And just for this special breed of event.

I'm far from against picture-in-picture and split screens in general. You should just know of my multi-monitor, tablets / mobile setup for the yearly 24 Heures du Mans automotive event :p

I don't doubt that there can be a fascination in it. But the fact that you are having to work hard to persuade the cycling obsessives on this site of the beauty of the endeavour makes it apparent that it is a very niche interest, and so the likelihood of that intensity of coverage being commercially sustainable seems infinitesimal.

There will always be crowds frowning upon something new - just until they've had the experience themselves :)
