On this sad day Wouter Weylandt, aged 26, died during the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Thoughts go out to his friends and family.

I'm seeing the feed from RAI sport and they are sounding very grim. Shots of grieving riders. A long shot from the air of the crash site and - I sure hope I am wrong - but, honest to God, it looks like a body under a blanket. Very long shot, can't see any thing. I don't speak Italian at all, but I have never heard a group of Italians this grim and subdued. Not joking about cultural stereotypes at a time like this, but you know what I mean.

David Harmon on Twitter: "Wouter has passed away it is being reported by RAI and AFP"

Very, very sad.

Shocking and sad. I wish I had something more profound to say. Our thoughts are all with his family, friends and fellow riders.

This is truly horrible news. When it happened on TV I wasn't really watching and had no idea how serious it was. I became interested in Weylandt after watching his victory last year in the Giro and was really impressed by him. This is a huge loss for everyone.

I'd say this puts the sport into perspective, but I won't.

It's the lack of perspective that saddens me the most. It's is just sad beyond words.
