The Broadcaster F***up of the Year Award: Belgian broadcaster trying to list the previous 5 winners of Dwars door West-Vlaanderen, accidentally listing them all as AG2R rider Wouter Weylandt (yes, a man who's been dead for most of a decade), then quickly "correcting" them all to Gediminas Bagdonas.

I would also like to add a category:

Most interesting tactical observation: The BinckBank Tour showed that it doesn't take more than a couple of strong riders to infiltrate a breakaway for the sprinters' teams to actually be snubbed repeatedly. It would be nice if that lesson would encourage a bit more aggression on flat Grand Tour stages next year.

How could anyone mix those two up? I fail to see any similarities beyond

1: They are/were both professional cyclists.
2: None of them has actually won Dwars door West-Vlaanderen.

(Also, can't believe it's been that long...)

How the hell is possible to claim that Tom Dumoulin is rider of the season?!
The guy had 2 (TWO!!! :surprised: ) wins in entire season!
Ok, he had great consistency, but that alone doesn't bring you the top spot. You need wins! Big wins, or at least a lot of not that big ones. He has neither.
3 podiums doesn't make you the best rider of the season, not even close.
Valverde, Yates, Thomas and Froome, all had a better season than him. Hell even Viviani had a better season.

I'm following so far

or at least a lot of not that big ones.
I'm not really sure where this is going to

Hell even Viviani had a better season.
I chuckled.

Going by that logic it took Valverde until this World Championship to exceed Cunego.

Best poster of the year: del1962 ;) .

I pretty much agree with the entire post. But man, there were a lot of highlights in'18, and also so many exploits and/or WTF moments. I can't wait for '19 to get started.

This picture of Alaphilippe and Valverde on the podium at Fleche Wallone is one of my favorite pictures of the season.

However the worlds when Alejandro won will always be my favorite moment of the entire season.

I don't get this Valverde/Cunego analogy?

That was right about where Valverde ranked in terms of big wins. He had a single monument on Cunego in big wins.

And how is that comparable with Dumoulin/Viviani?
Not close.

For now with Dumoulin.

I never compared him with Viviani.

I didn't understood your comment then...

Anyway to clear things up, Dumoulin, to be considered the best rider of the year, or among the very best, needed to win one of those races he ended up on podium or close (Giro, Tour, WCRR). Or he needed to win couple of other important races, but not big as those mentioned above, and mixed it up with those podiums (something like Valverde did in 2014 for example).
This way, he had a very good season, but he's not in the top 5 best riders of the season imo. Valverde, Yates, Thomas, Froome and Viviani (in that order), all had better season than him. He's in the company of Sagan, Terpstra, Alaphilippe...

I fully agree that he needed that big win to make a case for rider of the year. I've said that he lacked the big win this year many times.

In terms of level and consistency I think it was one of the most impressive years, but not in terms of achievements. I would just say that putting him behind Viviani is taking it wayy too far for me.

You're maybe right. Dumoulin is overall better rider than Viviani, there's no doubt, but I think that the guy who won 18 times (and winning is never easy), won 7 GT stages, 10 WT races, won very difficult Italian championship, is slightly ahead of the guy that won 2 GT stages and had Giro, Tour and WC ITT podiums, along with 4th place in the WC RR, no matter how impressive and consistent he was.
