Perhaps he didn't want Lampre to have a wasted spot in their lineup (assuming he would have made their Giro squad), as he wouldn't have done much in the Giro.

Anyways, about time he retired. He's had a good career, and now time to draw it to a close. I wish him well in life after cycling.

Why better or what better way to exit? The thing is we remember him by his dry humor not his racing. Not sure he could exit better, maybe a 15 minute stand up comedy skit instead? :rolleyes:
