Yea, but the numbers/ratings are just so much better if you put it on public TV. They should try to meet in the middle, a long term deal and RAI agrees to invest more money into their broadcasting infrastructure, but things are usually a bit more complicated.
If they sell the rights to Mediaset there won't be any problems with ratings since they generally make the same or even more than RAI. In the 90s doing that really helped a lot to modernise a product that looked still the same of 30 years before.
Anyway anything will be an improvement over RAI's cold war Soviet infrastructure, not to mention the end product, on saturday when i was forced to watch them, because they were the only showing Emilia, blood started to flow from my eyes, so bad was the quality of the images, and from my ears, hearing their comment for 1 hour and an half.

So, just found a French-language report from FDJ about today's racing, and decided to run it through Google-translate because I'm weird like that. Here's why you shouldn't always take auto-translate programs too literally:

In the aftermath of a muddy Paris-Roubaix, the riders taking part in the Coppa Bernocchi this Monday in Lombardy were not much more spoiled. The entire race was contested under a downpour, and Thibaut Pinot took advantage of the conditions to show off. The Franc-Comtois isolated himself with five riders 140 kilometers from the finish, and has never been seen again. He ended up taking fifth place in a solo race won by Remco Evenepoel. A hell of a day to start a crucial week.

 Though, of course it would explain why he's not riding Varesine...

You enjoy bunch sprints more than offensive racing that ends with a solo victory?

Sometimes.

Especially if the solo is just a result of some lame-ass tactical muck-up in the group the solo rider has ridden away from, which was what we saw all the time in the Tour.

I don't buy that all bunch sprint stages by default are bad, either and there you still have some excitement and doubt of who is going to win instead of watching Patrick Konrad or some other going for 50 kilometres or some such, and never having an ounce of doubt that he will win.

I saw more than enough of the others in the Tour.

I'm with you on Tour breakaways, especially on those days you expect a yellow jersey battle and the peloton comes in 14 minutes behind.
But, breakaways in one day races are exciting; the problem with yesterday was that because of RAI's 1990s technology we saw neither of the two decisive moments and only got to see a Remco ITT.

Yes, I agree that breakaways in one-day races are fine, I just wanted to stir the pot a bit ;)

Although, I much prefer a small group going together rather than a long solo.

It really depends here as well though. The solo in Druivenkoers was a lot more interesting because 3 teams in the peloton kept chasing so the gap remained well under 1 minute most of the time. Yesterday was more like taking candy from a baby. And we didn't get to see the most interesting part.

Yeah, Mediaset would be a good option, but no idea if they want to get back into the whole cycling broadcasting thing.

It depends on which sprinters are in the race and who the solo rider is, but I can definitely relate. I still get nightmares about the 2000 TdF, and particularly Erik Dekker's stage wins. Not that I had anything against him, but I really wanted those bunch sprints. Still not a fan of solo wins, unless it's in a GC context, or I really like the rider in question.

I can "live with" bunch sprints when there was a break that had an actual chance, and where the sprinters had to overcome hardship, be it climbs, bad weather, or other. Bunch sprints were a break is being kept well within reach, with 3 teams in the peloton ready to open up the throttle, and where the sprinters can take a nap until the finish, are much worse than any solo victory i can imagine.

Best scenario's are those where there is an actual battle, be it in favor of the chase, the peloton or the attacker(s).

Ahh, but those 10-20 seconds of adrenaline, and the minutes of anticipation before are the best thing there is :sunglasses: 137 bpm heart rate while sitting down staring at a screen, that's pretty exciting
