Gaviria crashed (surprise surprise) during training yesterday and has injured his wrist. Team confirmed he will start tomorrow though.

The lad better learn to stay on his bike :(

What's it with his poor bike handling skills? Is it the trackie background?

Stuyven also crashed this last week. I'm pretty sure AC crashed this year as well. Boonen has crashed several times this year. GVA did late last year. I'm sure I'm missing some.

A crash doesn't automatically mean your a bad bike handler.

Yr, but he's crashing at all the important moments. I really want him to win MSR so that the naysayers will shut up.

This means he'll have to wait another year for a really big win.

Hopefully Gaviria is not injured. If he is fine, he is my pick to win the race. Though Sagan and Demare look in superrb form too. Degenkolb should be very good as well. Kristoff I have more doubts since he started the season pretty slow. Matthews, Colbrelli, and Bouhanni are dark horses in a sprint. Boasson Hagen was pretty good in Strade but he will probably not survive the long distance.

Van Avermaet, Kwiatkowski, Felline, and Wellens should be pretty aggressive in the race, would love to see those 4 going on the attack (with Alaphilippe and Gilbert following but they will probably just mark the moves if Gaviria is fine). Sagan will probably mark the moves as well or maybe he will just wait for the strong teams to close the gap.[/quote]

? He won 4 races already...

In Oman the sprinting field wasn't very strong (though Kristoff did great to hang on on the hills of stage 4), and in Besseges Demare was better than him. And he didn't win a stage in P-N. Though he is still one of the 5 favourites obviously, which gives him a great chance to win.

Would be a real shame but that would up the chances of unleashing Gilbert and/or Alaphilippe. This would make the race more interesting for the neutral viewer and also the Sagan-fans, cause then he could just follow those Quickstep guys. I doubt they would go for a sprint with Boonen at the end ...

Much as I like Gaviria and do not wish any injury on him, Alaphillipe and/or Gilbert going berserk would be fantastic.

Another variable to predict:
the maximum advantage of the break
(doomed as always :( )

20min, 15min, 10 min?
About 15min.
Nooo, I just saw that Bono isn't on the startlist, MST without him in the breakaway will be a bit strange.

Agree. I crashed 2 days ago, couldn't walk for a day, my bike was/is completely trash, I doubt even Sagan could save that one when a person is crashing in front of you like a amateur at 40 km/ph. Literally impossible to react, it just happens to quickly... but Gaviria seems to crash a bit too much.

I feel for ya dude...that sucks. Of course I hope you're okay, but also that you can get your bike fixed or replaced for a good price. I know it ain't super easy for most of us to just replace a good bike.

My sympathies as well.

To take it back to MSR & Gaviria: last time I fell off, my injuries were relatively superficial, but I couldn't believe how much energy it took to heal wounds etc. Was a good two weeks before I was back to full strength. Really made me appreciate how much this must affect a pro, where a couple of % is the difference between winning and getting dropped.

Kirby will be calling race over for the peloton, as the presence of the inevitable winner in the breakaway is the death knell of anyone else's chances.
I think its William Clarke.

From what I've read around here about Kirby, would that even matter? Seems he'd probably hype Clarke anyway, not realising that it's technically the "wrong" Clarke.

What's the situation with the wind on the Cipressa & Poggio ?
Very light tailwind. Some chance of an attack sticking for more than 500m
Maybe not:

11:26:03 CET
News from our reporter on the ground Stephen Farrand is that after the lovely little tailwind on the coast, the riders can expect the wind to change direction and they will have to battle through a headwind.

Oh, that sucks, it could have been more open.

"The wind is blowing a little stronger out there and the flags are up. This could make things a little more challenging for the escapees."
Any chance for echelons ?
