He had just had another problem and had just made it back with his team before the crash.

Yep you don't want to be catching up to a slower rider during Arenberg, so since the break is just ahead they're catching it beorehand

Pretty shameful by Van Avermaet's team for him to be chasing back alone at this stage.

Already had a mechanical before, hence why near the back for the second crash/mechanical.

They probably don't have the power to help GVA through the cobbles so better to try and hang on and then drop back to help him on the flat on the way to Arenberg.
