Let me get this straight.

You think Degenkolb can beat on form Gilbert, Voeckler, Hushovd, Evans, etc. on uphills.

AND you think Degenkolb can beat on form Farrar, Petacchi, Ciolek, Boonen, Cav, etc on the sprints.

I admire your tenacity, but it's severely misguided IMO.

Except for Gilbert everyone. And who says Gilbert will be on top of his game. He can have bad days too

Also guys don't forget that Degenkolb can easily win the "MTF" in stage 1 of Criterium Dauphine this year!

So can Degenkolb, with a likelihood that is far greater. :)

Gilbert has never proofen he can be succesfull in sommer. It's one thing winning uphill finishes in spring when teh big guns are not on form. It's another thing in July.

Well Johny can win almost every stage the first 9 days. Cav can win 4 max

Which translates to: "Johnny can lose almost every stage in the first 9 days. Can will win 3 or 4."

That is the difference between potential and proven ability.

Teams aren't going to experiment at the Tour. Certainly not with a novice pro.

Maybe he's this year's German, Peter Sagan?

Stop reacting to BavarianTroll.

Dege's a huge talent, maybe the biggest of his generation. But Le Tour can wait for him next year. Grab some easy wins in Austria instead.

He can also beat Sky, Garmin and Liquigas in the TTT - on his own.

Were you paying attention to the Vuelta last year?
Gilbert completely destroyed on a couple of the uphill stages, when many of the top guys (Rodriguez, Anton, etc.) were peaking for the Vuelta.

And that stage was in August, which is in fact, summer. ;)

In German we have a saying. "Man muss die Feste feiern wie sie fallen"

Das stimmt, aber das Echo wird kommen. 100-fach :D

Ich bin mir auch nicht darüber im klaren, welche episode der comedyshow das gerade ist.
Ist das nun payback-time von dir, oder attack-time, oder attack-followed by-paybacktime-followed-by-attackrevenge. Oder nur celebration ? lol

But anyway, the Tony-Martin-was-dropped-in-the-mountains-party will be even bigger now. It's clear that in this forum, the rest of DL and about whole Tour will be about Tony and bavarianrider.
Well thats at least some alternative comedy to Evans, Gesink or ACF, Dutch mafia comedy.

Degenkolb is a huge talent... but biggest of his generation?

I'm not even 100% sure he's the biggest from this year's group of neo-pro's. Matthews seems every bit as talented.

Vuelta is second tier competition.

It's not so easy to be in top shape in late April and to be in top shape in in July again. We'll have to wait an see if Gilbert can do it. Think of Bartali. He was as good as Gilbert in spring, but was a total bust at the Tour.

The sad think is I actually liked Tony Martin a few months ago. Was happy to see him win Paris-Nice. But now I'm kind of hoping he fails simply due to an annoying message board poster.

I said "maybe" - the coming years will show. Matthews, Kittel, Guardini - they're all great guys. Can't wait to see them fight against each other for GT stages.

Do you promise to shut up about all German riders if he wins more than one stage?

I don't say he won't win, of course he might. I just say we can not know for sure that Gilbert will be a succesfull Tour rider. It's not so easy peaking two times a year. plus he never faced the competition he'll face in the Tour. It's one thing to win in your backyard in spring, or to win on the big stage in July.
By the way i don't like the vast majority of german riders.

Troll bot...

He already took a second place in the Tour in 2008 (last time he participated...) ánd successfully peaked at least twice in one year a few times.

Pretty sure the Schlecks, Vino, Evans, Cav, Canc, and every other rider peak two times a year. In fact, the Schlecks peak at the Ardennes and then peak at, wait for it, the Tour.

Who did he beat at Amstel? Rodriguez, Schleck, Cunego, Hesjedal.
They're all gonna be at the Tour.
Who did he beat at Fleche? Rodriguez, Sanchez, Schleck, Vino.
They're all gonna be at the Tour.
Who did he beat at Liege? Andy and Frank.
They're all gonna be at the Tour.

Vuelta =/ Tour

You guys should limit your expectations a bit. Gilbert is not a machine. You can't excpect him to dominate the whole year like he did in spring. Give the man a rest. If he can win a stage fine. But don't act as if he has to destroy everyone.
