I doubt if Evans is particularly concerned about the form of Wiggins, Zabriskie, Cancellara, Martin or other time trial specialists who will be no threat at all to him in the Tour.

I assume you didn't see the Tour in 2009 then?

wiggins was a fluke that will never happen again with such a hard parcours and very little TT.

I'm not too sure about that. Van Houwelingen was rather vague about their aims for today's TT. "Get to know the course in a relaxed condition" and that sort of thing.
With that he meant, relaxed as in, there is no pressure for the GC in the Dauphine anymore.

It was pretty clear really. One recon at relaxed pace, and then full out in the ITT, but with no GC in mind for once. Every other ITT Gesink has ridden was usually with a GC position at stake or some high profile event (Olympics ITT). This is the first ITT in years he rides without pressure. That's what Van Houwelingen means

People make out that Brad TT'd his way to 4th in 2009, but he climbed extremely well.

How do you know that the combination of factors that resulted in his 4th place in 2009 won't happen again this year? In what respect was it a fluke? If he was capable of such a performance then, why not now?

Wiggins
Zabriskie
Vino
Martin
EBH
Degenkolb???
Brajkovic
Evans

I can see Wiggins making up 11 seconds on Vino, if he rides a good ITT.

Also would Zabriskie maybe be riding the TDF for the TTT????

Degenkolb aside, you'd say it was probably between those mentioned, but the weather might mean you can exclude DZ, EBH and Martin also.

Agreed. On the queen stage Wiggins came 7th. And although he had good support from Vande Velde early on, he was exposed against Armstrong which almost certainly cost him a final podium.

I saw that race, but I've also seen a considerable number of other stage races both men rode. I can't recall Wiggins ever being a threat to an in form Evans at any climb-heavy stage race before or since.

I'm not having a pop at Wiggins here. I just don't think that one good Tour performance, which has never been followed up, makes him a realistic threat to the likes of Evans this year. An Evans who has already won two of the better stage races this season.

It's not inconceivable that Wiggins could rediscover his 2009 Tour form and that the racing could be as conservative as that year and in those circumstances Wiggins might be a threat for a top 5. But "not inconceivable" is about as tenuous as you can get. The overwhelming likelihood, based on his record in stage races with real climbs, is that he won't feature in the same part of the GC table as Evans. Wiggins is a better time triallist than Evans, but Evans is a better climber and by a greater margin.

I'd only start rating Wiggins as a likely (as opposed to just about possible) contender for a top 5 slot again if the Tour starts placing more emphasis on time trialling over climbing again. If there was 300km of ITT in the Tour, and correspondingly less in the way of mountain top finishes, he'd be a real favourite for a podium spot and even a viable contender for a win. But he's riding in the wrong era for that.

And yes, you are correct that Wiggins climbed well in 2009. It was the best climbing performance of his life and even then he was greatly assisted by the conservatism of the racing. It's one thing to cling on at a steady pace, quite another to do so when the mountain goats start changing pace.

Yeah, I just saw it too; either they are significantly behind schedule or the TdF site isn't up to date (I'm assuming the former).
