Its happened in European football as well sans Barcelona.

Teams prefer to play defensive then win 1-0 rather than play with flair and some risk to win 3-2.

Chelsea and Real Madrid under Mourinho are/were classic examples of this. Often in the away leg of the Champions League game the intent was to get a 0-0 draw! Try watching that for 90 minutes.

hah... good point. also I'm sure there are other factors too, but the 0-0 and 1-0 games are often cited by Americans as why they have a hard time getting into European football. There are no doubt purists that love to watch a strongly contested 1-0 Champions game or a low scoring, defensively dominated NBA game as much as a higher scoring game, but for many fans, it just gets boring.

Maxiton, you may have a point, but on the other hand Armstrong won 22 TdF stages, made a number of big attacks, and his duels with Ullrich were epic at times.

What is remotely entertaining about someone riding off uncontested to take 8th or 9th place?
it's more entertaining than the lemmings in the peloton, keeping an eye on each other while doing absolutely f*** all.

seriously, though, some points up for grabs at the end, non?

So, the peloton hit the Aubisque and decided to switch off? Typical TdF. Would only have been an interesting stage if there were 3-4 HC/Cat 1's before hand. Even then, the top of Aubisque is a bit too far from Lourdes.

They only have 6 days in the mountains, why waste one of them by turning it into a typical transition stage. It doesn't have to be an MTF, it just has to be worthy of being recognised as a mountain stage. A few stages in the first week were harder than this.

Yeah, there were some exciting moments, but I was never much impressed with the so called duals with Ulrich, the eternal second.
