Well, in a stage like today's they would never stand a chance if they stayed with the peloton (not that they will win from the break, but at least their odds are slightly better). I do believe, however, both of them could learn to time their attacks a little better. But I think it should not be a surprise if De Gendt won a transition stage in this year's Tour already.
