Wielerflits isn't a news source, they copy paste stuff, in this case from the Telegraaf. Where it says that he had a flat before the Alto de Valdepenas, and that's the penultimate climb.

So Dekker_T, curb the hype a bit :p

I see. Duly noted for future reference. Wielerflits is not to be trusted completely. I just find it odd that he said that particular event might have costed him the win though. That's what threw me off.

He said the energy he had to spent to pass all the dropped riders on the 2nd cat climb to get back to the favourites group couldve have cost him the win today.
Still comes down 'if' and 'if' is one of the most useless things there are :)

Exactly. He had bad luck, that's a given, but to say it might have cost him the win from 20ks out is a bit far-fetched. It's plausible but generically not accepted as a good excuse. Notwithstanding, he did awesome.

That's not hard. How old is JVDB and how many GT has he ridden in his career?

That's like saying Leipheimers GT record > JvdB

His results in GT's are better though... wether or not Mollema has ridden less, doesn't matter :p I see JVdB getting a better result here as well

Thanks for the update. One tough kid, which is more than can be said about the bike.

According to this article: http://www.procycling.no/article3215730.ece
Arvesen was in the Sky-bus ready to retire form the race, but then decided "dammit, I can't quit."

There's also a photo of the bike. The frame is literally broken in two.

Tweet from Karsten Kroon:The worst crash I've ever seen, going 70k/h I was in the wheel of @kaarvesen when a child ran on the road and he couldn't avoid him.

I narrowly escaped and thought they were both dead. I was in shock, could not peddel anymore and started crying.

I thought, so now the race stops or what? Incredibly, both Kurt and the kid are more or less ok. Thank god."
Sounds like one hell of a crash.

I was able to translate the article pretty well. He said he was racing at about 60km/hr upon impact, and the kid had run onto the road to pick up a bottle a previous rider had tossed - and as Arvesen came around he couldn't stop and hit the kid.

Everyone was allright though. Arvesen did consider retiring, and was getting undressed in the team bus - but decided that he couldn't quit there and then.

Nasty crash... I hope the boy can learn from his mistakes.

and you missed the point, I'm saying the comparison doesn't make sense because JvdB is much further in his career than Mollema

yes, he is, that's what makes him a better GT rider atm :p

Purito is amazingly strong. There are plenty of mtn stages that he can gain time back on some of the others if he loses 3mins in the ITT. He's looking super strong. I was a little dissapointed with nibali today but surprised with JVdb. Wiggins did as well as I expected.

last year's vuelta didn't have the greatest field, unsurprised if the tempo is a little hard this year.

But I do think nibbles has grown a lot since last vuelta also. He is a real chance for the overall imo.

Nice. So Poels 2:11 was also faster than Anton last year  heck, even the Mollema/Scarponi/Vandenbroeck (2:13) was faster than Anton last year.

No wonder Nibali couldn't do it this year. He rides the same time as last year (2:17)
Difficult to compare from year to year imo as conditions, race tatics, etc can change a fair bit. Nibali's problem was that he just exploded by trying to go with Moreno and Jrod quite early.

It is comparable I guess cause the final stretch was 100 meters longer, so they powered up even faster :)!

Its a decent indicator. Especially being the end of a stage, with no break away sticking you know they'll go up it as quick as possible so its possible to compare. Even the fact its uphill reduces the wind variable a bit.

Wind doesn't matter that much, the finish is in a street filled with houses on both sides for the most part.

Arvesen's encounter with the child yesterday! The woman on the left is possibly the mother.

Not for nothing but... if Nibali had trouble following Moreno and JRod... he's kinda up sh*t creek without a paddle come Angliru.

I see Nibali having the worst day of his life (on the bike of course) on the Angliru.

Ouch... I'm surprised Arvesen managed to get back on the bike today, albeit not for too long. Hope the kid's ok and will learn his lesson

I don't understand people. I swear to God. What was she thinking?!

Why some human beings do what they do is beyond me.

According to the Dutch Eurosport lads, the boy has no more than a broken arm and a cut lip, which is a pretty good sized miracle! Karsten Kroon, who was close behind Arvesen when this happened, tweeted that he was in tears on his bike as he thought for sure that both would be dead.
