Does the Giro have a rule allowing the gruppetto to stay if it's big enough?

yes it has been known - my guess is the grupetto will have to be miniscule before they eliminate Cav

I mean, in the Tour it's a specific rule - 20% of the field and everyone in the group loses 20 points but stays in. Is it codified in the Giro, or is it a case of the organiser's discretion?

Very nice work by Saxo Bank.. Until now.
Also, lol at Farnese-Vini. One bend and they were gone. Actually pretty nice sprint by Guardini. He was boxed in but managed to finish decent. That guy has some serious high top speed.
