I kind of agree that it's sad to not see guys really even try to go halfway for it until 5 km. I was watching clips from races in the 80's and it doesn't even seem like the same sport.
The big problem is, too many people are praying for the last climbing day to be their day instead of doing the work early and taking the lead ahead of time. These people don't seem to realize that most people who win tours win it on the efforts earlier in the race than their later efforts. Look at Contador. He almost always attacks early in tours and gets small 30-60 second advantages. A few stages later, that's up for 3 minutes and suddenly no one else has a chance, all before the big stages!The earlier races in tours help you get where you need to be so you don't have to worry too bad on the last climbing stage. The best part is, even if it doesn't work on one of the early climbing days, you will be recovered again on another stage and can take it there.
