2012 Road World Championships, Mens Road Race Maastricht - Valkenburg 267 km 23/09/12

Congrats to Gilbert for this gifted gold medal.

As usual with the World Championship road race nothing out of the order happens during the race over a course that prevents few surprises. The big teams try to control it and they are successful given the easy route. So it was a predicted final sprint with some 50 guys left, with the strongest classical guy yet again wins the rainbow, as it is supposed to be.

WC road race is a completly, predictable, joke. Every year a snoozefest in central Europe. I hope the corrupt fat irish ******* standing next to Gilbert is happy now.

No but Fabian can make the difference on the top of the climb, the 1.5km part from Cauberg to finish would be ideal for a 100% Cancellara. But I think he would get outsprinted by Gilbert then

i was thinking the exact same thing
anyway.. nice win
kinda bored by this scenario by now but whatever

Wiggins also has shown some interest about riding PR. My guess is they will both build up for the cobbles and then head of to the Giro and Froome to lead the Tour. Should probably take this to a Sky thread...

Last thing I will say on the subject.. dont think that if Wiggins ever wants to challenge for a GT he will simultaneously be capable of challenging competitively on the cobbles...

I am done for the day on here, so dont worry about taking the discussion to a relevant thread.

And to keep the post on topic, Valverde's perfomance today hopefully demonstrates he will be capable of challenging in the Ardennes next year, as he did seem to have quite a lot left in the tank come the Cauberg and we know how strong he is in an uphill sprint.

Yeah I agree, it's too predictable that's why I don't like it.

Blame Italians, they had 4 guys in breakaway and they did nothing at all for the great Nibali

Not even close to Mendrisio IMO

I think Geelong was by far the most spectacular WC of the last 10 years. I didn't really like the winner, but that was great racing from beginning to end.

Why should i hide my disappointment when it so obvious their obsession with one type of rider in rainbow every year?

Nothing against Gilbert though. He was brutal.

That the strongest man wins by an uphill attack.

Correction. The strongest man over his home course. I would like to see that mans face on Mortirolo.

Almost a certain future world champion if he can finish in the front group over this distance on this time of parcours.

...or at least rack up a series of near misses at the Worlds that Zabel himself would be proud of ;)

And yet you will enjoy Contador at a Giro?

I know I'm a hypocrite :D

If it's a rider I like I won't complain obviously, because just the rider winning will be enjoyable for me. But when I don't like the rider I at least want an exciting race so that there's something I can enjoy

Was it really that exciting? I mean, Phil's attack was good but besides that, what was exciting?

exactly. and even that was predictable
this was the most likely outcome. which is the opposite of exciting

Mendrisio was far better

Yes, exactly. Could you find 5 more similar types than Gilbert, Cavendish, Hushovd, Evans and Ballan?

Ow, you probably couldn't find 5 more different types. Oops.

Yeah that's my point. I'm glad someone understands me.

Of course Phil stays arrogant but if he'd raced the race differently I would've liked him more :D

It's difficult to describe how little sense that makes.

really? i thought it's axiomatical almost
there are a number of possible scenarios regarding each race, the most likely of which will surprise you the least. clearly this type of finish and outcome is still miles ahead of KBK 2012, but def not overly exciting.

I guess this disapproves Ryo's theory that EBH has no stamina/engine for longer classics

The man that knows it all... once again proven wrong *sigh*

To be fair to him, he was correct until today.

I too was under the same impression.
