Nope, they aren't. If this stage was 220+km long, we would be seeing the exact same thing. Huez last year was an exception, not the rule.

That is because with the long stages, we don't see what we see now because the broadcast hasn't start yet. Lots of times the broadcast starts with the break in place. But the action before that is the same as we see today.

Stages like this always start at a fast tempo due to people trying to get in the break.

Shorter stages with climbs generally are ridden at fast tempos

There is no real corralation between the two

So every stage has 40 km of peloton going full gas up and downhill, lots of attacks and counter-attacks, either the stage is 120 km long or 240 ?

If the stage looks like this, yes they do. If the stage is flat and most likely to end in a sprint, no.

Does anyone think Vino could win the stage today- after descending like crazy?

I think he could- he seemed to roll in comfortably on stage 8.
