He finished in the front group, AFAIK you don't get any points for riding hard uphill all the time. Might be more sensible to catch the pelleton on the downhill. And the peleton always seems to go slow on the downhill. Energy saved is energy remaining.

As for all those who got dropped who we wouldn'nt expect to drop etc. People have good days and bad days. Perhaps somebody had a bad night sleep? A slight cough perhaps? Or wanted to save themselves for other stages? Trained hard and not at peak on day one? Who knows.
Staying in the peloton costs less energy than trying to catch up in the downhill...

In my inexperienced opinion that would depend on the downhill, and the skill of the downhiller. If your a lot better downhilling than the pelleton and would end up breaking all the time, why not give your self a little something to catch up?

From Pinotti's twitter:
Some data from today's stage 1 #dauphine : col du Corbier 22'30" 5.4 w/kg ,20.5 km/h , drafting. Vam 1500 mt

Pretty high w/kg for an early climb, particularly considering it was a large peloton where the drafting effect must have been pretty big. And Veilleux didn't even lose time on the peloton on this climb...he must've been pushing at least 6 w/kg

Tuned in earlier with like 4K to go and was quite surprised to see Veilleux solo off the front with such a big gap. Quite the ride by him, chapeau.

And another Top 10 result for NetApp in a big race. They upped their game this year significantly.
Well Barta was second last year in Giro stage...and won some quite big races in quite impressive style. Until now I can't say there's big difference between 2012 and 2013. But in the end of Dauphine when Leo will be in top five and maybe win some stage...that will be definitely improvement.
