All due to a cyst.

Bring in Moser. Try for a few stage wins with him. He can still pull out in that last week if needs be.

I say Cannondale will make a priority in trying to sign a GC rider in the off season at the end of the year.

Sad news indeed. Wonder whether Damiano Caruso will be called to replace him.
It's truly sad to see the demise of this once great Italian team.
What a joke of a team they are sending to the Giro.

Losing Liquigas as sponsor was a huge blow to them. They couldn't afford to keep Nibali then and couldn't compete with Astana's offer.

Gazzetta are saying Basso is out of the Giro. I wonder who will come in for him now.

from cycling news. .

"Gazetta dello Sport has reportedly confirmed that two-time winner Ivan Basso (Cannondale) will not be on the start line in Naples on Saturday for the Giro d'Italia.

Speculation surrounding the 35-year-old's presence in the race was circulating last night.

Basso is suffering from a cyst in an undisclosed location.

The Italian won the Giro in 2006 and 2010.

More to come..."

his abdomen? left foot?

Seems weird to not let Moser start instead. He finally showed some form yesterday and there are a few stages that suits him well.

I suspect it's because he's not on the registered short list they have to select the final team from. If that's the case he's not eligible for selection.

Still ridiculous not to be on the shortlist if that's the case. All their eggs were really on Basso to do something of note and it's poor planning on their part not to have some worthy cover on standby. It's not like he was racing in Dunkerque and would have had to pull out of there. He just raced in Germany yesterday so it would have been no hassle in telling him at the last minute that he was on to start the Giro.

Terrible news about Basso, yes he would have likely disappointed but even so I was looking forward to seeing him again. No Basso, no Rujano, please Astana wrap Nibali in cotton wool till Saturday!
