The hammered the final km for him it seemed, then Wiggins popped past and caught the last wheel of the group in front whereas they free-wheeled over the line just behind looking knackered. In reality they were only a few bike lengths behind Wiggins, but lost that extra time because they didn't make contact with the group in front.

Wiggins terrible descent cost him too much time. Whether it was an injury or just loss of confidence, don't know. Possibly both.

Henao and Uran lost even more time.

Yeah...not in the best of shapes either are they, well I guess they buried themselves to help Wigoo bridge to that group, without them he'd still be on the road !

I hope I don't curse Gesink, but I am so impressed by him so far. I think he looks very strong and reminds me of Hesjedal last year, I think Gesink on a good level can challenge Nibali. What do you guys think?

He certainly clattered his knee I think, but he rode the final few kms at half speed, totally lost confidence and just crept around the rest of the descent.

I reckon that if he'd done what Nibali did a few km before and got straight back up and on the bike he might have limited his loss to 30s or less.

I think Gesink is riding smart. Not wasting energy and being well placed at the end of the stages.

Really surprised Wiggins came in with that group at the end, his teammates were really impressive. I don't think we have had an out and out MT Stage to gauge everyones form yet. Inxtausti might hang around.

One really should not draw too many conclusions after these first week´s stages. A Löfkvist and others managed to almost dominate the Giro for five, seven or even ten days.

It really only starts tomorrow. Everything else is not so important.

Nibali should be worried if he was 1.30 behind Wiggins after today. Wiggins doesn´t have to be this worried that now he is 1.30 behind Nibali.

Even Santaromita and Weening still in the Top10... (Though, ofc, you can´t rule out Santaromita might be a surprise of this Giro also after three weeks).

That could actually be witnessed on TV? Interesting. I really had problems making out who was who a lot of the time because my stream was pretty bad. I had to rely on what the horrible No-Kelly guy said about what was going on...

The fixed camera looking down the finishing straight caught a glimpse of them a few times, and it looked like Sky helmets leading the charge in their group, then you definitely made out Wiggins nip around them to grab the wheel of the few guys ahead and both Colombians seem to coast over the line just after.

Meaning, mentally, he is a wreck?

Missed completely the stage today. :(

Happy for Benat!
As expected Sir Wiggo was distanced.
Nibali could have done more but fell twice.
Henao and Uran chances gone down the drain courtesy of Sky and Wiggins
Hesjedal, Evans and Gesink looking good.

Nah, the Blanco guy who was looking strong today was Kelderman. Gesink couldn't hold his wheel when Nibali & co attacked.

Sure, Gesink on a good level can challenge Nibali, but the question is whether he's on a good level ;)

Unfortunately, gesink hasn't shown convincing climbing skills for a while now, especially after that broken leg incident. I think the first tough mountain stage will show how competent he is.

Seems so. It's just very strange why he wouldn't go out full throttle on the flat when he wasn't in pain. Tomorrow will be interesting, considering that the first part of the TT isn't untechnical.

OK, quick estimate to get a feel for Wiggins task.

IS WIGGINS DOOMED?

Let's say he can do the TT 2kph faster than Nibali.
Let's say Nibali can do the 55 km TT in something like an average speed of 45 kph.

In that case, Wiggins would gain about 3 minutes on him.
Even if Wiggins is 1 kph faster than Nibali, he gains over 1' 30".

Granted Wiggins isn't in top form, but I would think much too early to write him off.

DB not confident about how he will go tomorrow?

well, I think he could see the damage on screen today. Gotta stay in the game with those paychecks.

Even without Wiggo they can go aggressive with the materiel.
