We were looking into the Etna stage separately.

Rujano was clearly weaker there.

Keep in mind that rujano was up front when Contador went for the first time. No way he could have followed that attack.

He isn't being silly, those 3km that Contador reached 6.9 w/kg (highly unlikely, Ferrari overestimates wattages all the time), Rujano was in his wheel, so would reach more or less the same level. It just goes to show how little use it has to extrapolate from a small subsection of a single climb.

Head wind and drafting by the tiny Rujano helped him stay on Contador's wheel--even then Contador simply rode away from him when it became clear Rujano wasn't going to take pulls (AC overshot the final corner, otherwise Rujano wouldn't have finished as close as he did on that stage). I recall the stage and the entire race vividly. Rujano wasn't on Contador's level at any time.

So maybe Rujano would have produced 6.7 or 6.8 w/kg for those 3 km's (considering he is lighter), still something he never showed before or after that of being capable of. Again, pointless to draw any conclusions from that short effort.

Ever heard of the phenomenon of drafting? Rujano was already ahead when Contador attacked, and then he could just let Contador motorpace him toward the finish.

No one knows. But I don't think Rujano's initial move looked much less impressive because the peloton was very weak at that day. Contador tried to knock Rujano off several times but only last attempt succeded.

In crosswinds Rujano even had to push more W/kg than Contador. I believe there is a thread about Rujano and Contador some pages down the forum, where this already had been discussed.

So if Cobo was 'inspired' then Froome was not?

You mean as he did in La Vuelta?

I think the earlier poster was referring to the 2011 Vuelta where Froome would have in all likelihood have won had he not been domestiquing for Wiggins.

Re 2012 Vuelta nothing can be drawn comparing Contador to Froome in that race as AC was riding his first GT and Froome was ridding a back to back GT having gone hard during the Olympics as well.

For what its worth I think Foome will be proven to be a level below Contador when both are at their peak. However what he did last summer 2nd tour 2nd olympic TT and 4th vuelta was extremely impressive.

Break has 2:15. Reminder of your five riders: Rast (RNT), Bookwalter (BMC), Schillinger (TNE), Smukulis (KAT) and Friedemann (CSS) #TOO13

I don't see any of these 5 surviving to the top

Did anyone get a Valentine's card today.

I just got one from Chris Froome. It says and I quote

"Thanks Wheelie for being my best friend ever. Enjoy your day. Many thanks. Chrissie."

aww, that was sweet wasn't it ?
