Hahaha. first on project? Wow didn't think I'd be that high. More Kiserlovski super domming please!

Stage 15
Nobody had chosen Geniez (he was on my shortlist...) or Scarponi, and the red jersey bonuses meant that Nibali scored better than Roche, so today's battle was about which Nibalists had riders in lower reaches of the top 10: 18-valve took the honours through extra points from Pozzovivo and Arroyo.

Projected points
Another day of many withdrawals: the winning team might come down to how many riders hang on to get their 15 finishing points.

A bad day for teams that have Marczynski, Nerz, Ratto, Nieve or Santaromita; a good day if you have Nibali, Roche, Sam Sanchez, or Cardoso.

the way things look, it is going to be between cyivel and tuarts, unless there is an upset in the following stages. I am calling a 2-digit difference between them

congrats to jakob747 and Hitch for choosing Barguil.

At last Uran scored some points for me and 2 others. *big sigh*

I did some calculations, if the Vuelta had ended today this would be the perfect team you could have chosen for 3500 points:

HORNER Chris 633
ROCHE Nicolas 434
MORENO FERNANDEZ Daniel 383
POZZOVIVO Domenico 300
KÖNIG Leopold 252
PINOT Thibaut 217
BARGUIL Warren 175
RATTO Daniele 127
RICHEZE ARAQUISTAIN Ariel Maximiliano 121

2642 points for a price of 3488

but a team including Nibali could have come close as well:

NIBALI Vincenzo 844
HORNER Chris 633
ROCHE Nicolas 434
KÖNIG Leopold 252
BARGUIL Warren 175
RATTO Daniele 127
BRAJKOVIC Janez 85
MENDES Jose Joao Pimenta Costa 55
DODI Luca 15

2620 points return for a price of 3497

Stage 16
As has already been said, having Barguil means that Hitch and Jakob747 again share the daily award. No very popular riders today in the top 10 today: Uran had most followers with three.

i was getting excited for the wrong reason. I had assumed that i earned 40 pts with uran. I realized only now that, i replaced him with Henao at the last moment. :(

I think I now understand why armchair gives 9 extra columns for trying out teams.

thanks for the update, armchair

All I need is Nibali to continue cracking in mountain stages, Horner to remember his age, and Valverde to get caught in an echelon and I'll be fine with Jrod. :D

No chance of Horner remembering his age though.

Instead of saying nibali cracks, horner blows, valv burns; it is easier to hope for a feuntade from J-rod.

According to my calculation, the current running best team (with all teammates still in race) is:

HORNER**Christopher
BARGUIL**Warren
RATTO**Daniele
GENIEZ**Alexandre
RICHEZE**Maximiliano Ariel
MORENO FERNANDEZ**Daniel
MATTHEWS**Michael
KONIG**Leopold
ROCHE**Nicolas

cost = 2994.
earnings=1206
By including those who abandoned, there is an additional 6 pt adv by replacing Geniez with stybar

With Nibali, the best team would be:

NIBALI**Vincenzo
HORNER**Christopher
MATTHEWS**Michael
RICHEZE**Maximiliano Ariel
BARGUIL**Warren
KONIG**Leopold
RATTO**Daniele
CHAINEL**Steve
ZANDIO ECHAIDE**Xabier
cost=3499; earnings=1077.

Of course, I haven't added the GC and other points here/

Stage 17
Bole and Farrar meant that Kazistuta beat the Nibalist teams, who were once again the main daily scorers, but he was in turn beaten today by Vladimir, who uniquely combined Farrar with Nibali.

Projected points
Other than the stage points, the only appreciable points gained or lost were related to Roche leapfrogging Pozzovivo. 18-Valve and Hilltop finisher both have Pozzovivo, so Jancouver overtakes both of them into 4th.

Projected points

Arroyo's dropping 2 places was about as dramatic as it got in the projected points battle today. However, Horner drawing closer to Nibali opens the prospect of greater change: if they were to swap places on the projected podium, and there were no other changes, then the top Horner team (Hilltop Finisher) would overtake Tuarts by just two points.

Projected points
A proper shake up at last: loads of points won and lost

Horner: 148 points for 8 teams
Rodriguez: 85 points for 1 team
Konig: 28 points for 7 teams
Sanchez: 15 points for 8 teams
-------
Nibali: -123 points for 11 teams
Anton:-24 for 1 team
Pinot: -25 for 11 teams

Although Horner is now scheduled to finish top, and has half as many stage placing points again as Nibali, and is ahead of him in oth green and polka dot jerseys, the points amassed by Nibali for holding the red jersey means that there is only 32 points between them in projected points gained during the game.

That means that there is a huge number of teams who have put themselves in the running. The Horner teams, apart from that 32 team advantage, also had more than twice the remaining budget to spend on the other 8 riders, so could have been expected to dominate, but that is not necessarily so.

Hilltop Finisher would have taken the lead today but for Pinot's dropped time on the final climb in this stage. Leader Tuarts also has him, but that was cancelled out by Konig swapping 7th place with him.

Main point scorers noted for leading teams

Stage 20

Most of the points are virtually guaranteed by now, but anyway:
Guaranteed points
Jakob747's affinity for young French riders, which has already gained him decent points through Barguil, brings him another daily award through Kenny E.

Nibali loses another 43 points relative to Horner, but on daily points is still 73 points ahead of Papy. The new leader in this category, Hitch, has Horner, but the next six are Nibalists.

Hornerians are finally getting the upper hand, despite the red jersey points that Nibali had accrued, and occupy the top 5 slots. Previous leader, Tuarts, is one of those who suffer from Konig being dropped early, but remains the top Nibalist. Search, who this morning had been top ten despite having neither Horner nor Nibali, and with the definite disadvantage of having spent big on Henao, had a dual disaster with Roche and Konig.

Presumably the only points up for grabs will be the stage points, tweaks in the lower top ten of the points competition, and some minor shiftings in the lower places if riders fail to finish with the peloton. As regards potential scorers tomorrow in the teams near the top, Mkind07 has Arndt, but more significantly, both Hitch and Batchuba have both Matthews and Farrar. Hitch will overhaul Hilltop if either of the anglophone sprinters wins, or one is second and the other in the top eight.

If Matthews comes second, (and therefore gets 20 points in the green jersey standings, moving to 9th and therefore getting 2 CQ points) and Farrar is outside the top ten, we could get a draw.

Meh, 14th on projected. Failure for me. :( And to think, I considered taking Nibali and Horner.

Armchair - Thanks for hosting the game!

Elissonde and Barguil fully lived up to my expectations. Fantastic prospects those two.

Too bad Dan Martin crashed out early. I reckon he could have done very, very well.

Same goes for David de la Cruz. I noted several positive signs however. Especially his performance on Alto de Monachil.

Henao obviously a huge disappointment.

This will be a tense finale - I was 2nd in the Vuelta game last year but without ever really challenging for 1st place in the last days. If I can hold off Hitch then that will really save my 2013 CQ season (no where in the Main game, cobbles, Giro, Tour and 2nd to last in the youth game).

Having made it to Madrid surely Orica will ride for Howard?

Stage 21
A stage for sprinters in a race for climbers. Some of us kept back some of our team places for such days though:
Matthews: 70 points for 12 teams
Farrar: 40 points for 6 teams
Arndt: 25 points for 5 teams
Meersman: 15 points for 3 teams
Bole: 7 pts for 2 teams
Petit: 5 pts for 1 team
Janse van Rensberg: 3 pts for 4 teams

4 teams combine Matthews and Farrar (Kazistuta, Hitch, Batchuba and Blues in the Bottle), and one (Pentacycle) has the equally valuable Matthews, Arndt, Meersman combination, but Kazituta pips the rest for daily honours, because he also has Bole.

No red jersey points available today: final stage + red jersey points:

Final rankings
As predicted yesterday, the sprinters turn over Hilltop Finisher at the last, and bring victory to Hitch, with Batchuba hot on his tail. Tuarts, Cyivel and Geraint Too Fast represent the Nibalists in the top ten, otherwise it needed faith in the elderly to get a high placing. At the other end of the table, a combination of Arndt and Meersman lifted Murali off the bottom, allowing me, Wim van Sevanant-like, to reprise my Lanterne rouge of the Tour.

Despite his humble final position, Evans is the Best had the majority of his team (5 riders) among the 50%+ squad. All bar three of us have at least one.

Impeccable picks are the riders who scored more points than anyone cheaper than them. Obviously, there are none more expensive than Horner. The impeccable picks are:
Horner 280 891
Konig 227 240
Herrada 212, 128
Nerz 159 118
Ratto 138 112
Morkov 137 85
Mendes 91 66
Kohler 70 30
Zandio 33 28
Camano 6 15

Several teams have two of these: Mkind07, Tuarts, Cyivel, Jancouver, Leadbelly and Jpettersen.
Nibali and Roche are only beaten by Horner among the riders who were cheaper than them.

In terms of daily awards, several riders took two of them: Search, Vladimir, Maaaaaaaarten and Jakob747.

And if you want to play with the numbers any further for yourselves, you'll find them here at MediaFire.
